So it appears I will be getting a free car from my brother. After 5 years of owning this car, he finally came to the realization that he doesn't have the garage/time/tools/money/experience/mechanical ability to build his drift king AE86 Truneo Corolla 'yo check me out as I slide sideways mobile.Sounds like every 17 year old kid that post on a forum huh? But my brother is 40 and is living his ricer dreams via a Hyundai Accent, but I digress...

So what do I do with this thing? I don't know squat about 'yotas and have no ideas what mods these things like. I do know that I see a $2010 challenge in it's future though and might use it for a few local auto-x comps.

Little info on the car. 1986 Corrola hatch, 4AGE motor that ran when parked by the last owner, my brother never got it running though. 5-speed, rear disc. Needs some rust repair, brother said that rockers and rails are solid, but floors have holes.

I Googled about a LS1 swap and it has been done, but it seems like a awful lot of fab work and it doesn't fit real well either. I would also like to stay in the Toyota family while using carb(s) (Webers?)

What you all got?

I know someone that has one with a silvertop 20v in it, and its supposed to be pretty fast. I think a 3TC will work also if you want something different.

It's a terrible, terrible car.

You should give/sell it to me immediately, so that I may dispose of it properly

Sport Compact Car (R.I.P.) had a project AE86 and it wasnt particularly fast or clean looking, but apparently, it shared a lot of suspension bits with its rally car brethren Celicas and therefore making it handle wasnt a huge ordeal.

Personally, there is probably no car Id rather own than the one youre getting free, so IMHO, Id not ever consider the LS1, or a Wankel or F22C or any of the other abominations that can be found swapped into that chassis. Its iconic to people who like 80s cars in general, and even more so to people like me who like classic cars from the land of the rising sun. The 4AGE is a very adept motor, period specific, accepts boost or ITBs without much hassle, and can make plenty more power than that chassis is comfortable with without having to spend megabuxx on ZOMG63-way-adjustable-remote-oil-reservoir-coilovers and super frame mods.

I'd consider a 4AGZE (supercharged), for all the extra torques .

An SR20 turbo fits in without too much hassle. Here in Australia, it's a popular swap for drifters seeking more power. But I tend to agree with 4cylfurry, keep it as a 4A. GZE, 20v, or a warmed-over 16v (on carbs), would all be cool, simple and fun.

Thanks for all the replies so far. I saw the car yesterday (I've seen it before but never really got deep into it). It's actually not in bad shape. The floors are all still there, but it will need rear quarters in front of the wheels and one of the rear shock towers is pretty rusted and will likely need to be replaced. Motor is all there and complete. The interior is gone though, not one bit left except for the steering wheel.

My brother is somewhat bummed about getting rid of it. This all started because his girlfriend and him are buying the house they have been renting for 6 years. There is no garage and my brother doesn't see one coming anytime soon (like ever) so he was talking about scrapping the car. He feels there is just to much rust to deal with. Now I have fixed worse on my Miata so I graciously offered to take the car from him and at least give it new life. Who knows maybe in a few years after I get it running I'll give it back to him....

Pictures coming soon.

I would just get this back up and running and tinker with the suspension a bit. These are getting harder and harder to find with drift kids sinking their teeth into them and just being put out to pasture due to old age..

-buy KYB AGX sw20 mr2 front strut inserts, and shorten the casings 40mm. buy 8kg/mm coilover springs. then weld on a threaded body and buy camber plates and RCAS.

-THEN buy KYB AGX camaro rear shocks, TRD 6kg/mm springs, panhard bar and make your own four link.

-buy bigger rear sway bar.

keep the motor stock and reliable, do just that ^^^, and you will love that car and be part of the ae86 cult.

oh, another good thing is the techno toy tuning shifter rebuild kit, it makes the shifting a lot more precise. One of the bushings toyota used for the pivot point just crumbles with age and replacing it with delrin makes it feel a lot better.

If it's a real GT-S, you can sell it over here in Cali for insane amounts of money.

I'd love to have another hachi, but budget and driveway constraints prevent me from doing so.

Yup....I'd say keep the 4A-G....having a high-winding, N/A four is both a big chunk of the car's character and a big component of the driving fun. Swaps for more grunt are possible, but they typically just overwhelm the transmission, and then you have to cut up the tunnel to put a bigger one in, and then you blow the differential and end up doing a bunch of fab. work to fit a bigger one, which adds massively to the unsprung weight and kills the ride, and then it needs bigger brakes, more fab. and more unsprung weight, and then the chassis is flexing, and it needs more bracing and more weight, and well....you get the picture.

I'd vote for getting it running, new suspension bushings, new brake components as needed, and stock springs/shocks/sways to start. You will still have a ball driving it. If you like that enough, then get springs and shocks for more grip and more fun. Remember that TRD makes a fair number of parts that are designed and optimized for this chassis, so a TRD dealer can be a great source of parts. The Camaro/MR2 route is also popular, but may not offer quite the same total balance.

I've had three, and still have two, both the one I bought in 1997 and the one I bought in 2001, and still love them. Check out my rides on this site and feel free to ask any additional questions in this thread.

Stick with the 4AG. Get it running. Freshen it up. Then decide what you could do with it.

Personally, I think that would make an awesome rally car. It would be badass to do some road rally with that thing.
