Looking at a 91 miata with a new battery and ignition switch. Won't crank. Seems completely dead but lughts, etc., work. Ideas?

starter or solenoid?

especially if no "click".

Starter bench tested as ok.

Mine did that for a while. The lug on the starter had lost its nut and the wire from the solenoid wasn't connected.

It's difficult to stop a Miata from turning over. There's a switch on the clutch pedal, if that's disconnected it won't crank. High resistance in the wires (ie, from a badly performed alarm install) to the solenoid will do it as well.

Is there such a thing as well-performed alarm install?

Hell no. Unless you figure that the purpose of an alarm is to prevent the car from starting, in which case most are pretty well done.

My DD Miata had something like 6 splices in a 9" chunk of wire leading to the solenoid.

I don't know where the starter solenoid is on a Miata, but can you jump it?

If it works, then try and hot wire the solenoid (simulate ignition signal), and keep moving up until it doesn't (e.g. Ignition switch). If The hot wire doesn't work it's likely the solenoid.
