I bought one of these because it was the only non annoying one I could find, but it was not cheap and after a couple months it won't turn on anymore.  https://www.ecstuning.com/b-vdo-parts/radio-orange-display-usb-mp3-wma-12v-vdo/tr7412ub-or~con/

Are there any other similar ones that I should try for a replacement?  I am looking for Aux input, AM/FM radio, an actual knob for volume, and orange display with no flashing buttons or continuously scrolling display text.  I don't really need Bluetooth, CD player or anything else.

That unit is supposed to have a 2 year warranty.  Why don't you see if VDO will replace it?

The consensus used to be that Nakamichi was the place to buy "classy" looking head units...but that's been years since I looked.  And they're also not cheap, as I recall.

In reply to psteav :

IIRC Nakamichi left the US market for a while and the classy head units aren't available new anymore. The older, good units are pretty expensive used these days as most nineties and early 2000s higher end car audio stuff.

I’ve gotten a couple of sub $100 Blaupunkts from Crutchfield that fit the same criteria. They tend to be a moving target, so I’m not sure what the current version is called at this point. I think one of mine was the Madrid.

This is one of those things you just have to dig around for. But I'd still try to get the other one fixed if you didn't dislike it.

I will email them and see, the place I got it from marked it as used to avoid customs (even though it was new), and the warranty requires taking it to an authorized dealer to inspect and replace if needed which I doubt exists in the USA but it's possible.  I have looked quite a bit and never seen any other similar ones, there is a super rare late 90s factory VW one that would work but I have only seen one ever, but all the new ones are pretty ugly.

Look at marine radios. There are a lot simpler designs. I don't know about the orange display but it's worth a shot.

I have a Kenwood with variable colors (an older version of this one).   When it was in my E36 I was able to set it to match the dash (slightly redder than true orange) and now in my Fox body I set it to pale green to match.   I know variable color displays are not exclusive to Kenwood, so it is a feature you might look for.
