Alright, this morning I went to head to work, only to get a pop(possibly a backfire) on my '77 E21 with mechanical fuel injection. It died out and was creeped back into the garage under starter power.
I didn't have time to look at WTF happened, but has anyone ever experienced this or know what went wrong?
That is not a lot to go off of...do you have fuel and spark?

Its a possible either or.....either way it wouldn't run. I was late for work, so I couldn't look it over.
Well if you don't have spark it might not even be a MFI problem. Coil could have just E36 M3 the bed. Post when you have more info and I should be able to help, I have messed with a handful of M10s before.

I'm guessing its a fuel problem......it idled for about 20 seconds after the pop while I tried to get it back in the garage under her own power.
without further information its really hard to say can be many things right now. Paul as soon as you check it for the basic items post your findings. The M10 is one of BMW's best
Go to bimmerforums e21 section (75-83, however they list it...). Check the FAQ on KJet troubleshooting, and if that doesn't yield anything, post up looking for JRCook. Master of Kjet, did a turbo on his car using all KJet parts - know it backwards and forwards.
I think system pressure problems between cold pressure and warm up can cause the backfire, but it's been many moon since I've studied over it.
bmw2002faq.com is also a great resource

I'm still IP banned from BF.c..........I guess further proof you shouldn't beat a Moderator's M3 LTW at an autox and post the results.
Cutter, I'll make sure I post up findings
MR2peak, thank you. Just not being bf.c should make it 30 times more useful.

Well, I found the problem after poking around......UNMETERED AIR! The backfire through the throttle body popped the intake boot off of the mechanical fuelie setup, thus leading to no air being sucked through it to meter/regulate the fuel mixture. This all is of course, if I have somehow figured out how this mechanical wizardry works......either way, it evidently wanted new plugs, as it repeated the process until I put new ones in......its happily driven 25 miles since without issue. Woot!
Great news.....see she just wanted some attention and some loving

She just didn't want driven in the rain......
In reply to yamaha:
see this is why it is hard sometimes to help with a problem because vital information is left out......if you would of told us it was raining we would of told you she didnt want to get wet
edit: does that happen offen when you try get a lady wet they act sick like come down with a headache

Nah, most of the time they want put away dry.....
Just saw the thread and the first thing that popped into my head was vacuum leak. One time I checked the oil and didn't get the dipstick all the way back in. It backfired once and then ran like crap on the thirty mile drive home. Wouldn't even idle on it's own. Got home popped the hood and it still took me all evening to figure out what had actually happened.

This one was pretty straight forward......
I opened the hood to find that intake hose popped off the fuelie unit.....lol
Now you can solve the backfire issues :)
