Messed around a little with a barn find TR8 I picked up the other day. Put car in gear and it still rolls. Engine doesn't spin when the car is rolling, but driveshaft and rear end yoke do. I figure either clutch plate isn't in contact with the flywheel, or the 5 speed tranny is absolutely junk. Any other ideas? I'm guessing the seller dragged it out of the barn with the tranny in gear and possibly the engine was stuck, resulting in something snapping in the tranny. Tried all the forward an reverse gears same results.
Could have been put in the barn that way, if even 4th isnt working, snapped input shaft or something in the output area.
Clutch wouldn't cause this unless it was stored depressed, even then I have my doubts it would stay open considering the spring forces at play there.
would a TR7 make enough torque to destroy a transmission?

It sounds like this is a v8 one.
A fragged clutch disc or pressure plate would cause that. I've abuse a lot of British cars in my day, including dragging them around while in gear. It would be more prone to just dragging the tires than breaking something.
In reply to Apis_Mellifera:
That somehow skipped my mind entirely, the clutch might have had the center tore out from abuse.
Or rusted out. It is british. Lol
Heisenberg problem! Your gonna be unsure until you pull the transmission out.

+1 no way to know until you see if the clutch is working.
Rear end could be blown up.

This is more like Schrodinger's clutch. It can be said that the clutch is both working and broken at the same time, we just can't know which one for sure without taking it apart.

if the driveshaft is turning that isn't it......driveshaft, rear axle, and trans will be turning all the time, clutch is only for the power from the engine. A destroyed trans or rear end would pop & grind a bit when attempting to turn the rear tires. Been there, done that unfortunately. You have something berkeleyed up inside the bellhousing of the transmission. You won't know until you get into it.

Schrodinger!! Hate it when I mix principles!!

It's all coming apart at some point. Car is too far gone with rust, so it's fate is a parts car or organ donor for a reshell. The engine and trans aren't worth much anyway. The money is in all the pieces that attach to the engine, and the other pieces that are unique to TR8. The bell housing is worth more than the transmission since the bell is TR8 and the trans could be TR7 or TR8.
