It seems to me it is a lot more expensive (both to buy and maintain), less comfortable (they don't have a lot of room inside) Jaguar XJS V12.
Interesting comparison, but a Jags a Jag, did they make the 400 with a stick, all I keep finding are autos which I can't imagine are fun or easy to get parts for...
Actually its a GM transmission and a LS bolts right up. I have been dreaming of doing such a thing for a while. IE sell motor to 250gto replica builder, drop in POWZR
Just stop thinking about this! It is a bad idea. I have been searching for one for the last six months and there are not enough to go around.

There's one with minor front end damage for $9,500 with engine, don't know how much it's worth but between the engine, transmission and the interior, think you could get the cost down to $0? (can you say GRM challenge Ferrari)

That is the same color as my old one. I bought it sight unseen off eBay in I think 2001 for 9800. Nothing worked, but it ran and drove, the seats were awesome. I drove it a month and sold it on eBay for I think what I paid or a little more. Engine sounded wicked, but the trans was a let down. At the same time there was a 308gt4 floating around ebay that was caged for 14000. I should have bought that, I would still own it.

That's more than "minor front end damage" in Ferrari-speak.

I've been wanting to get in on all the LSx swap fun, but I hate body work. I'm looking for the good body / bad (or "missing") engine combo.

Ah... the Jag derailment threw me... still do you really expect Ferrari to have modified their bell pattern to match a GM trans?

Why buy a Ferrari and then replace the ENGINE? Would you buy a Lotus and give it a suspension swap?

Would you buy an RX7 and then remove those delicious spinning triangles only to dump in a piston motor with pushrods?

...... waitaminute.

I'm just teasing, i agree with you.

What's a decent 550 go for these days?

90K+. Though I did drive one at ~80K with full history and a 6 speed in a bad color a few months back.

Because the 400i is a common engine donor for people who are rebuilding more valuable examples of the marque. There are cars out there without an engine.

On a side note, I'm always looking for a Lotus Elan in need of restoration.

Makes me think about my MR idea applying to awesome FWD cars...

Is it just me, or with all this talk of 308s and the mention of a Lotus Elan reek of another "Fiat vs. Lotus" thread? Seriously though, it is impossible for me (a son of a lifelong hardcore Fiat guy) to look at a 308 and not see all the Fiat parts on 'em, which just makes me think of it more as a Fiat than a Ferrari, Magnum PI influence or not.

There's a bad color on a 550?

What are the bad colors? I saw a dark blue one recently I loved. I'm thinking that might not be a popular color on a Ferrari.

There are bad color's, as in they don;t resell well or they don;t hold their values as well.

Dark blue is one of those colors most of the time. Resale Ferrari red and tan still wins the day.

That's why I'm painting the Javelin Ferrari Red (Rosso Corsa) and (eventually) buying a Fly Yellow Ferrari!

I haven't seen (including pics) a 550 color that I haven't liked. Honestly, the gunmetal metallic on tan is just the E36 M3 for me on that car...

I would love to find a dark red (Amaranto, Rosso Barchetta, etc.) 550 with a manual. Favorite combination.

With the exception of the Daytona, front engine Ferrari's do nothing for me.

Edit I take that back any front engine Ferrari's after the Daytona.
