I have a line on a 1990 Honda CRX DX. speed with a Tein suspension on it. Unfortunately it has steel wheels with cheap tires on it so it is difficult to tell how well set up the suspension is. Everything works, the car shifts easily, the clutch and brakes feel good, the air is cold and heat is hot. No obvious crash damage, Just the drivers door checkstrap has been welded where it attaches to the jamb.
Where do I find the value for this thing? all I can find is a Civic DX no CRX DX is listed on KBB.Com or the other suspects.
I'm looking for a DD to replace my truck that I crashed over the winter in the ice. I also would like to try my hand at autocross next season. The previous owner purportedly autocrossed it. I say purportedly because it is at an Acura specialist service centre and I havent spoken with the owner yet.
What should I look for? What are the rust points? What wheel and tire combo works for cheap? Anything else?
Thanks in advance, B.
Any 4 x 100 wheel/tire combo works, its a CRX!
There will be no metal left ahead of the rear wheelwells. Its a CRX!
Look for rust or other damage caused by a leaking moonroof.
Look for improperly applied ricer stuff under the hood.
Look for worn cv joints, worn out bushings, exhaust dragging on the ground.
I had a 91 Dx two years ago and a 89 Si currently. Both stock condition. The Si is obviously more fun in stock trim. The rust issues on the second generation are thankfully more just on the body panels. Rear quarters and the doors seem to be the big spots. As far as price, its hard to price them since they are popular and getting more rare, especially in unmolested condition. The prices were high when gas was around $4, but have dropped. Just expect them to be more than what Kbb says from my experience. Seeing your in GA, rust shouldn't be too bad, but then again it is a Jap car. Look to see if timing belt/water pump has been done. Turn hard in circles to see if you hear the axles clicking. I've had three EF's and parts are cheap. I'm sure there's something else I'm missing but I'm leaving work and I'm hungry! They are good, fun cars.
I picked up my 90 HF with Konis and H&Rs, good condition but not perfect, 140K miles for $1800, and the previous owner had put $1000 into maintenance (t-belt, w-pump, all new ignition system, etc) to give you a reference. He could have gotten a lot more for it from the right buyer if he wasn't in such a hurry to sell.
In my area a CRX shows up on CL about once a week, 1/3 is a riced out mess, 1/3 is a rust bucket, but the last 1/3 are usually in good shape.
NADA.com lists it as a Honda Civic 2DR Coupe CRX
No rust that I saw, I will have it put on the lift so I can poke at it with a screwstick in the likely places. No ricer stuff under the hood, doesnt look like there ever was, Even a stock sounding exhaust, only the suspension mods. Good heads up on driving it in circles, I already need to put a left axle in my wifes Altima, clicky clicky on right turns.
I gotta see if I can talk them down a bit more, Its been sitting a few months and the price has already dropped once in the time i have been driving by.
I hate mine. It's a woeful piece of crap that is lousy to drive, slow on the AutoX course and generally the worst vehicle I have ever owned. /sarcasm
Check the rockers.

If you pull the square plastic panels off in the rear of the pass compartment, you can see if someone patched up the rusted areas behind the rear fenderwells. I've seen quite a few rust free CRX's down in your area, so it may be rust free, but you should be safe and look closely.
