I need tires for my 84 911. I've got a set of wheels that will allow 215/45 17 - 245/40 17 tires.
I use the car for 4-5 autox a year, spirited club drives, just fun farting around. No commuting or anything.
NW Florida so some cool days, but no icy driving.
Natural choice seems to be RE71's but any one got any other thoughts?
Consider me interested, facing the same dilemma. 255/40r17 in my case.
I ran the BFG Rival S last year, and the RE71r this year. I preferred the RE71s. The FiST is FWD, puts 200 hp/300 ft-lbs to the wheels, and it's often freezing up here, so I dont think you can compare much, but there it is.
I am interested in this myself. I have been thinking of putting the RE71 on my locost in the spring. No daily driving, cold or wet driving because locost with out a top or heater.

I had RE71's on the V8 Pontiac Firefly. It made the car so.... tame.
Data point - I've had RE71's on the Boxster S all year in the PNW. Put over 3000 miles on them, 20 something autocross events including Packwood NT and ProSolo. Great grip, great manners, wearing very nicely. Will easily get next season out of them. No issues driving in rain/wet.
1 reason = A052's
This year they are the newest hotness for a track day 200TW, and they are a tad quicker. They build on the excellent manors of the RE71R. Whether that matters on an casual autocross car/weekend car is another story and one only the OP can decide.

So stones are fantastic tires, but they have a couple flaws.
They ride hard, they're loud and they will start to heat cycle pretty quickly if you're driving them on the street and the car spends time outside.
if you're only going to 4-5 autocrosses a year, investing in stones seems like a waste to me.
I'd personally run the Michelin PS4S or Conti ECS. The conti is cheaper but will wear faster, although it's got nice compliance in the sidewall.
Buy a 200tw if you're going to run at the track or autox exclusively.
I REALLY don't believe in putting street miles on a 200tw unless you're traveling to events. I had a few buddies go on roadtrips attending scca solo and prosolo national events one after the other, and in that case. I can totally see it.
But I just don't see the justification here for running them.
What about the Firehawks? Just bought a set for my dd, makes me want to try it at an autocross.

Looking at the contis. Same price as the Re71 with maybe a little more street friendly. Not planning any hpde events in this car.
The PS4 seemed good to, but there were several mentions of tread chunking, but only on track.
In reply to redstack :
You can't drive the PS4S and Conti like some folks want to drive them, like they drive 200tw tires.
I've had to learn myself how to not scrub so much and push the tires too hard. It's take time but I've learned and gotten faster in the process
Edit: to my point about how to drive the tires. The PS4S is THE #1 chosen tire of One Lap of America. They work on track, you just can't overdrive them and they're a phenomenal street tire.
Good point SC.
If I get serious about autox again I can find another set of wheels to mount 200tw
