Interested sure! Can I afford it? Maybe if I drained my savings account. Can I afford to actually race it? not a chance in hell.
Not really interested even if I could afford it.
They make pretty street cars but having helped a friend turn an E92 M3 into a BM car I can say "No thanks" to big, heavy, complicated, expensive, hard to get parts for racing cars. He spent something like $70k for the car, and then $40k on making it a race car... then tons more making it reliable only to get owned by an E36 M3 with a worked up S54 because... 700lbs lighter even fully gutted down to skins. You just can't come back from that deficit with power alone.
Now he is shopping for cars with the same power to weight but 2/3 the weight and half the complexity part because it's one thing to get beat by another fast car, it's quite another to DNF then have to wait 25 days for a cam sensor to come from Germany while you get passed in the points missing races.
I've convinced myself to sell off both race cars and buy/build a nice low end of the spectrum vintage racer with the proceeds (you hear me alfa!). Alfa, 2002, Fiat... old, simple, reasonably priced.
Only as a possible investment car. Seeing the prices of 1M's lately has made me wonder if this or waiting till the M2 comes out wouldn't be a bad short term investment. Especially if it's as small or smaller than the amount of 1M's that they produced.
As an investment, it's interesting. It might keep up with inflation, if you ignore the cost of funds to buy it, and the cost to keep it insured.
1 series M Coupe price appreciation
But when it comes to meeting the needs of the well-heeled gentleman/lady track driver/racer, I think Porsche has already cock-blocked the competition here.
Just depends whether anyone who would spend $80K for a new car to track would want to work the exclusivity angle, no? People bought that orange Lime Rock e92 M3 limited edition a couple years ago, and I see them at the track.
