You should be fine in winter driving. Global warming and all that. Just get a full set of the 17 inch front wheels and add snows. Having driven a C5 Z06 extensively I would probably find it annoying trying to drive it in snow even with skinny snow tires. Hope you're ready to operate the throttle by imitating Uma Thurman and, "Wiggle your big toe."
Start in second, less worry about wiggling the big toe

I say do it. it won't be any worse than a miata if you put decent snows on it. I would do the same if I was in your situation.
Jesus guys I'm not saying he will loose 15K owning a Vette 3-5 years.
I'm saying if he can financially handle the Possibility of loosing ~15K of value over the next 3-5 years compared to driving one of the most affordable to own/operate sporty cars on the road then he should go for it.
Absolutely it's possible that he could own a Vette for 3-5 years and have it be comparable in costs to his Miata. That is not guaranteed. I am simply saying if he could stomach the possibility of this vehicle decision costing him ~$3K more per year than his Miata then by all means go for it.

Sometime this week when I have time, I'll do a cost projection of ownership vs. the Miata. I'm curious about it as well, but note that I probably won't be autocrossing it regularly simply because I don't have time anymore--the fiance lives in Peoria, I live in Bloomington, and I am working 2 jobs. If I were to hit them like I used to, I would absolutely agree that it would be a $1-2k annual increase just in tires. But I imagine that 6-20 autocrosses over 3-5 years would be only a $500-$1000 increase total.
I think you've got the idea.
I suggest that you snap a C5 up NOW while normal people are trying to unload them before the winter/ to fund christmas overspending/whatever, buy some skinny wheels and tires (corvette forums are your friend as far as seeing what the skinniest thing you can fit over C5 brakes is, I'd guess F-Body front wheels at all four corners) then drive it for the winter.
If it is totally unacceptable in the snow, throw it in storage for a couple months, buy an A2 Golf for $700 for a winter beater, and sell the C5 at a profit in the spring when the sun comes back out and people start getting tax refund checks.
