Today, I decided I've had enough of the cold weather. I went to Menard's and picked up enough insulation to seal off my 12x20 garage. By the end of the day, and just the ceiling and garage door done, it was at 62 degrees. It was 11 degrees in there when I started todaey. I should have the walls done by the end of tuesday, then I'll get back to work on the "race" car.

Who else is going nuts this winter and what have you done to fix it?

Not much down time in the south, but I am rebuilding the garage. Rallycross yesterday and then autocross three of the next four weekends and then back to rallycross.

No heat in the garage in sub freezing temps and working 2-3 weeks in a row so not gonna turn any wrenches soon.

Watched the 24 hr. online, that helps maintain the sanity. Looking up S197 parts online and planning upgrades for spring.

Outdoors, finally got to use the 4-stroke, two-stage snow blower I bought three years ago, never snowed enough to put gas in it till now. Six forward speeds, two reverse and a headlight for night work... priceless. Shoulda had one of these twenty years ago instead of jerkin' meself off w/ that old 21" two-stroke... it was still better than shoveling tho.

We got about 16in of snow this weekend. I have a pile of snow about 6 feet tall on either side of the driveway now. I really enjoy the season's of Michigan, but this winter I have been itching to work on projects. I am hoping the heat in the garage will keep me busy until the weather breaks. I have ALOT of clean up work to be done on the saturn.

I'm hating it. I spent 3 hours in the 25-degree driveway putting a couple new lug studs on wife's new (to us) Sequoia, since the tire shop morons overtorqued the lugs and one broke off on the drive home (and found another that was partially sheared).

Trying to put the internal rear drum parking brake back together with coooooold fingers was no fun at all....and the truck is too big to easily work on in the garage (which isn't heated anyhow, so it's a moot point).

e21 hasn't been touched in 3 weeks....not motivated to work in the cold garage.

Totally sick of winter except I work weekends at a ski shop, so cold = more business = more money for me = more money for car projects.

What's this "winter" everybody's talking about?

Out here the early flowers seem to have decided it's spring, I'm seeing the trees starting to bud and I occasionally have to water the larger plants a little to avoid the root systems drying out completely. If someone has some spare snow, feel free to send it over .

This is the first bad winter I've ever been through in 8 years of living in Indiana. I hate it so much I'm seriously contemplating moving back to MS.

We're supposed to be 9 degrees here (-10 wind chill) here in DC on Tuesday. I generally enjoy winter, but this one has been far colder here than usual, but no substantial snowfall to make the cold worthwhile...

Stir crazy? Nah.. not this year. We bought snowmobiles

photo IMG_20140101_120532.jpg (and of course it's been unreasonably warm for interior Alaska this winter, temps hovering around 20 degrees to above freezing is no beuno if you want frozen rivers)

And moved to a house with an attached heated garage. It's only a single, but I can just barely get the Mustang inside with enough room to pull the front bumper photo 20140125_150052.jpg

and install a set of GT foglights on my V6.

This weekend's wrenching fun even has me thinking about doing some events with my car again... there are two track days a year in Alaska at Tanacross Airport outside of Tok along with a drag strip in Palmer, and Fairbanks should have it's own strip by next summer.

The car of course is back to being an "outide" car so the WR250R (which needs to get stripped down and greased) and the newer 4/ sled that won't start if its -20 unless its warm or jumped off a truck can rest inside where its warm.

I'm going nuts and my back is a bit sore from shoveling.

My garage is insulated so all my excuses are lame. I have a bunch of Corksport goodies waiting to go on my Speed6 but I'm waiting for at least a 35-40 degree day. I may be waiting a while.

Whatever, time to go out shoveling the fresh 4" that we woke up to this morning (and 4 degrees w/-20 wind chill).

I've been trying to work on my Alfa 164 whenever I get the chance. However, since I normally work three 12-hour graveyard shifts in a row and have had to cover for a couple of my co-worker's days off much of my daylight has been spent sleeping. When I am awake during the daytime I have to make sure it isn't snowing or dangerously cold before I even think of working on the Alfa. I've got some stuff accomplished but progress has been slow thanks to work and the weather.

To help pass the time I've also begun planning out my upgrade path for the Mustang and writing up ads for the leftover parts from my previous cars that I want to sell. I'm waffling on my stalled FC3S turbo project, though.

i can only heat my garage if it's above 10 and not waste tons of fuel to get it to 40. if it's 30 out i can fire up the heater and get it to 55 pretty easily.

that said, i've not been out there for a few weeks. i want to, but also don't want to freeze

Believe me, I'm going stir crazy. I had hip surgery 10 days ago, so I'm fairly immobile. I'm completely non-weight bearing on my right leg so I have to hobble around on crutches. There's not a whole lot I can do, though I'm trying hard to find things so that I don't wear out a pattern in our recliner. I can't stand just sitting here. I've got 5 more weeks on crutches, but it'll be more progressively weight bearing over those weeks. I get to start physical therapy on Friday, and I'm really excited for it. My doctors assured me I'd be strong enough to get back into the race car for the start of LeMons racing in May.

On the bright side, I get to work from home for 6 weeks.

I've been slowly cleaning up and reorganizing my garage and basement so I can finally start working on my TDi and build a new second bathroom. Very slowly. Fortunately, the little 240V, 4K watt cube heater I have for the garage will get it reasonably comfortable after running for an hour or two.

The fun part is how it's a constant tile game: need to move item A, but before that I need to move item B, which requires moving items C and D first (and so on...). It's getting there, but damn it's a slow process...

When I get annoyed with all that and need to do something car related I've been puttering around with the T-9 conversion kit for my GT6. Right now I'm a 7/16" drill bit away from being able to mount the GT6 bell housing to the transmission.

I hate it. This winter has been brutal to say the least. I feel like it's impossible to get anything done. I spend whole weekends doing what I can do in an hour in the summer it seems. I've also been out working in the -15° wind chill too many days this year.

Have been working out in the garage, which is heated, but propane has spiked at over $4/gal due to local demands and service interruption.

No more heat in the garage for the time being...

I got pneumonia and bronchitis on New Year's eve and I'm just now back to around 90%. I always have big plans for the E30 over the winter but this time I really had a lot of projects primed and ready to go. And it's all been sitting there. So normally a month of downtime would make me jones but this has been especially painful. I had to try to damn near forget I have it. The crazy snowfalls and arctic temperatures haven't made it easy to justify to the wife why she still can't use our 2 car garage if I'm not doing anything.

As a temporary appeasement, I bought a seat heater kit and installed it in the 4Runner which is my tow mule and her winter beater. I will never do another upholstery related job, ever. Ever. I would literally rather buy another car with heated seats instead. The good news is I'm harder to hate with a warm butt.

I bought a new place in the fall with a detached uninsulated garage. I've been working on insulating it and am nearly done, but house things (new furnace, efficiency improvements etc.) have been eating time and money.

So far I've installed 20 rolls of R13. Have 7 more to complete the job. Then I get to wire it, drywall and finally organize.
