I have too much time on my hands and have figured out I could probably replace my Buick with a base C8 with mostly money I'm no longer spending on docs and meds.  I went and sat in one thinking squeezing my fat self into one would cure my delusions. It was far more  comfortable than I expected. If I got one it would be my daily, commuting 80 miles each way, except in very bad weather where I'd take the Jeep. My head says this is going to be difficult as sports cars should be tough to live with.  My heart says I've been doing this almost flawlessly for most of 20 years in a variety of GM products and this should be at least as reliable as a 90s Cavalier.  As midlife crisis' go would this fall closer to taking up competitive golf or knocking up a couple strippers?

Dude. Do it. I bet after driving a bus all day the transition into a c8 to commute home would be unreal. And with all the cylinder deactivation nonsense you'd probably get the same mileage as a 90s cavalier too. Win win.

Base model would be golf, aftermarket high end track-crazy ones would be the strippers.

It's a Corvette, which means it tends to have a pretty pedestrian drivetrain that's good for a fair number of miles. I don't see why not if you're not too concerned about salty season (or have a backup vehicle like your Jeep).

So that's another vote for "Do It".

Yeah, only real concerns i have would be the typical gm ones. Interior falling apart,  nla components after a couple years, etc. But, you're experienced enough with gm to know that going in.

So, do it. Definitely not hookers and blow crazy.

I also want you to write my eulogy.

If you're on the fence, order one now. You'll have at least the next 6 months to decide whether or not to go through with it.

One word:  potholes.

Right now you're commuting in a vehicle whose entire reason for existing is to smooth out life's little expansion joint bumps and freeze-thaw pitfalls.  The 'Vette is going to be... not that.

If you're cool with that, then go for it.  You certainly deserve to treat yourself to a little entertainment!

Being sales I need a 4-door car and I've looked at the Civic Type R.

I think the cost of oil, tires, and brakes would hurt a bit.   Me buying $1200 worth of tires every 10-12,000 miles would hurt.

I drive 27,000 mikes a year so a yearly $2,500 tire bill would not be good but guaranteed I'll always show up with a smile at my customers place.

I've had the same thoughts. The first thing I'd do is replace the stock wheels and tires with some 400-500 TW 245/40/18s. There are plenty of good tires in that TW range. That'd cut the price down by ~35% and they'd probably last 50% longer. Then I'd buy a set of your favorite 200TW 18's for the track.

BTW: Oil?

Sounds like a fun daily. Great points regarding rough roads and more durable tires. As long as your  commuting roads are reasonably decent, awesome idea to pursue.

I see Cletus McFarlane just got one, look over there for some inspiration, and "Do it for Dale!"

If you want a C8, you'll have to wait until the 2021s, or get really lucky and find one at a dealer. We had 4 on order for customers and between the strike and Covid berkeleying up production, only one of those customers is getting a 2020 and here we are in August and it hasn't even showed up yet. The others have to wait a year to get theirs, plus they have to pay the price increase for the 2021s

One showed up at the last autox & the owner was really pushing it. The 8-speed automatic is interesting, it sounded like he was in 3rd between the start line & timing lights, which was just a 90* corner.

He came pretty close to putting the back end into the Armco after the finish one run though.

I figured 8-10 quarts of Mobil 1 might get costly too?  As in comparison to the Cavalier.

Do they require a boat load of synthetic like a Porka?

(edit: posted same time as reply above)

The difference in price between synthetic and traditional seems pretty small these days.

A friend and fellow automotive media member just had one on loan. Transmission broke during the loan. Less than 1,500 miles on the car.

I might wait.

By all means do it, but wait a year. Two reasons:

1- don't ever buy the first year of a new corvette platform. There are always problems with latent defects and build quality that GM doesn't sort out at first, and I'd say that's compounded with the C8 being such a departure from the C7. You can bet there will be some corrections for 2021. See especially the 1968 and 1984 Corvettes for reference.

2- Let everyone else blow their wads early on dealer markups, allocations, etc etc. Waiting until the demand normalizes will get you more for your money.

But he has been doing this for 20 years in a variety of GM products!  That's just, like, par for the course.

One of my co-workers told me that last week "nobody in his family has bought a GM since his dad bought a Vega". LOL

I think 2020 is (was?) sold out - production stoppage made that weird, though. A 2021 might be the only thing available if you order one.

I can attest a manual C7 is a reliable daily.
