This year was supposed to be the year I finally get to do some HPDE type events. Well, now that we're having a kid I had to adjust some fun stuff out of the budget. Anyone do this volunteer deal to get free track time?
Anyone in the Dayton, OH area want to "commute" to mid ohio a few times this year with me?

I'm originally from Eaton, Ohio, but now I live near Detroit. I do plan on volunteering at a few NASA events this year. Mid Ohio is about three hours from me, as is Gingerman, so I'm not sure which I'll go to. I need the volunteer perks, as money is really tight...

If we both agree on a MO date, we can meet in Findlay and go from there.
I was a Official with Ohio Indiana Nasa for 4 seasons. They need the volunteer help. By having volunteer help they keep cost down to provide what I think is the best cost per hour track time. I moved from Dayton to Fla. and now work for Fla. NASA.
I do flagging for NASA Mid-Atlantic. Take pay in lieu of track time, until the car is streetable. Until then, the wife won't let me take the Jetta on the track, and I certainly don't want to take the bike out with cars on the track (I'll leave that to the Europeans, thank you very much). It's more fun that just going to the track and watching (I've seen some real sweet passing, though I'd prefer to have not seen some of the accidents that I've witnessed). Also, at least in NASA-MA, they also feed you on Friday night, Saturday lunch and dinner, and Sunday lunch. So, other than breakfast 2 days, I'm even covered for food. They even provide electricity for workers that have campers (I have an older conversion van).

My first time out to a track was as a NASA volunteer. I didn't have the money to partake in a track event, so I also hitched a ride over to the track with a friend who was doing HPDE1.
Even though I wasn't driving that weekend, I still learned plenty about driving. I was put to work helping out Timing and Scoring, so I got to see how the run groups were managed, where people made mistakes, what goes on during emergencies, etc.
Perhaps the most enlightening and entertaining moment of the weekend came when the HPDE1 group had a drill where random cars were black-flagged. We black-flagged my buddy and counted the number of times he missed the flag; he passed by half a dozen black flags before coming into the pits! (Now I try to remember, with modest success, to keep an eye out for flags.)
Find the right line of work during a NASA weekend and you can learn a lot about track etiquette, skills, techniques, etc. Getting free track time is icing on the cake.
You know about the NASA autocross in Dayton???
