I am collecting parts for a challenge build and a Junkyard in Canada has a great price on a salvage Chevy Volt battery that might just make it possible to get one in the budget. The problem is the yard specifically says they don't want to ship a plastic container of fiery death across the border. From my brief reading on the subject Canada isn't as stressed about it as the yard is and it might be possible for someone to drive up and bring it back and then plop it on a truck to ship it down to me. Anyone up there want to be part of a great adventure (or just tell me I'm insane for thinking it is even remotely possible)?
The battery is here:
Pièces d'autos Samson inc.
1058, St-Charles Sud
Granby (Québec)

The website is 2012 Chevy volt hybrid battery
Interesting. Canada Yard is asking $850 (presumably in Canuck dollars or $632 USD)
Off car-part.com I see US yards charging $1,500 - $2,500
Elsewhere, here on GRM I read that no Volt has ever needed a battery change. That 400+k miles on a battery is common, So, shouldn't there be a supply and demand problem here? Yards have batteries but who is buying them? Is each yard just holding out for the long dollar?
I can’t help, but I love the idea the there is a junkyard in Canada called Pièces d'autos.
Pièces d'autos Sampson, specifically. We have a vendor called Robert Pièces d'auto and there are a whole bunch of others with that in the name so I suspect it's more like a term like "parts store".
Quebec is a great place to look for car parts under market value, because the language barrier isolates them from the rest of North America. Miata hardtops are one example. It's also got a more European mix of cars, it's the only place I've ever seen a DeTomaso Innocenti running around free.

Oh hell yes.
And as fas as why Volt batteries exist in junkyards, it's gonna be body damage in 99% of cases. I've seen a wrecked Volt with battery still in it for $4k on CL years ago. Back when people put things on CL. Sigh..
In reply to Woody :
I grew up in Quebec, so this is just "Sampson Auto Parts", no big deal.
In reply to Keith Tanner :
My inlaws lived a mile or so from the Innocenti dealership in St.Eustache, Quebec. There were a half dozen cars there most of the time for many years.

I've got an Innocenti in the garage - I still think it would be a good EV candidate if I could home brew it for a reasonable cost.
I'm no help, but sounds like a hella interesting build.

They sit on CarPart for a long time at $1500 and up, especially if they try to add a huge core charge. Occasionally they list for closer to $1k without a core and are scooped up quickly by off grid guys and hopeful DIY EV builders. I had a line on a 200k mile $800 one (plus $300 shipping) but I was still figuring out the cheapest way to ship at that time and during my email exchanges with the yard the hold expired and someone in California scooped it up. If I can get one to my door for $1k I think can make the challenge budget work.
