Since a bunch of folks have called/emailed, I thought I'd post an invitation. The Maxton Mile has their annual Top Speed Challenge on April 10-11 in Maxton, North Carolina. 2008 there were 8 GRMer's and last year we saw 5. Right now it looks like 4 are already planning to go. If you are interested in hooking up with us we are already registered and have a room at the Holiday Inn. Drop me a PM and we will get organized. If you just plan to show up, we typically pit about 300 feet after the ticket gate on the left side near the pine trees. Look for the GRM sticker on the white trailer, or on the back window of the trusty rusty Stude.

I'm trying! Do the hotels usually fill up?
Right now, my plan is to head down to hang out and spectate...but I do have a bit of an itch to run something.
Man. Doesn't seem like that should be a 6 1/2 hour hike for me. But, if I set the cruise at 130...hmmmmm.

Usually the hotels are not bad at the other 4 events. However, the April event usually has a lot more people at it, so it may be more difficult.

I've been working on getting my Civic ready for Maxton for awhile. Medical issues and now possibly work issues (or lack of work) have held me up for the last year. I might have to come up there without the car and just hang out.
We usually get 10 tickets to hand out to those we know. If you are coming, send a PM.

Looks like I'm in. The plan is to dust off the Shadow, give it some fresh tires and let it stretch it's legs at bit on the Maxton Mile. Can't wait!
Anyone else?
I'd like to, but i won't know if i can make it until probably the week before.
We had a decent weekend of prep work. But the trailer has 4 feet of snow around it and the hitch is on the end away from the driveway. I need a dozer.

I'm surprised you haven't built one yet out of an old Bug and leftover circle track parts.

If anyone could do it, it would Wheels and his family, it's scary how much fab experience his boys have, and that's not including him....NUTS I TELL U! That being said, I would think it would be a bug, a couple of snowmobile drive trains, and some fenders that he got bored with... just a thought.
i gotta talk to my brother...i really really have wanted to do this for a few years...
i think i can put the car together in time without an issue....its just getting there. getting off work is a hassle when your self-employed and busy.

Self employed and busy is a very, very good thing. However...I still expect to see you guys down there!
i didnt say i was making any money, but i am busy.... haha
gotta weld my new cage in my car, but i talked to my brother today, and he'd love to come ... it'd be a weekend to remember, thats for sure...
i want to bring gutty, but it'd be banging the rev limited nearly by the 1/4 mile, and i havent done its cage either! (doing it the same time as my hatchback)
is there camping/sleeping available at the track, or a dirty cheap motel anywhere? i love budget trips.
Ask the Angry One about spending the night on site. Problemaddict was there too.
Camping at the track was fine. Would have been awesome if it wasn't 105 degrees that weekend. A handful of racers camp there so there's some good late-night bench racing to be had. And if you know who to ask, you just might get a tour of the airliner junkyard near-by.
My girl and I plus my greyhound set up camp, pitched a tent, hung out, and helped out. There's porta potties and a food vendor tent on site. Beyond that, you're on your own.

Yep. I wandered around where people were camping (some in tents, some in trailers, me in my Probe GT) and got into a good BS session about turbo'd Hayabusas and DC Hardcore that went until about 3AM and a case of PBR. Every time the security guy drove through we'd BS with him, and i heard he took a couple of people for a drive through the afore-mentioned junkyard.

Made some progress...finished clearing the snow from the driveway and from in front of the garage, organized tools/cleaned up the work area of the garage and pulled the transmission to replace the clutch.
Should have it reassembled and ready for a test run around the block (my neighbors love me!) within a week or so.
