So I go to leave today in the Jeep and I pull down the street and realize I forgot the books my wife asked me to return to the library, so I hit the brakes and the pedal just goes to the floor.

I think to myself, "I know that feeling, I just popped a brake line."

So I pump the brakes a couple more times, get out and look underneath and I see brake fluid dripping off the rear axle. Sigh.

So it looks like tomorrow I'm climbing under this thing to see what I have to replace. It's just another thing I don't really have money or time to fix.

I know what you mean. Just dumped a grand on the F-150, but you know will make it all better? A fresh home-made BLT. Yeeeaaah...

How about turning a corner? That feeling of dread as the pedal hits the floor is nearly indescribable.

If its the hose or the hardlines on the axle thats a pretty dang easy fix.

I was just going to do some quick body repairs on my DD. The holes kept getting bigger and multiplying. Was just supposed to be out of service for a week. Now it's gutted, big holes cut out of it and figuring out how to reach some inner structural bits. Would gladly trade my situation for a bad brake line and giant BLT. OTOH, I'm DDing Mrs. Oldtin's 928.

Well, I fear it's going to be more than just one brake line. My Jeep has unfortunately got the worst of the midwest winters. I've actually never done the brakes since I have owned it, so this maybe an opportune time to pull the wheels off and take a look at the brakes.

I had that happen at 120mph on the back straight at Mid-Ohio. Sand traps ahead.... It wasn't a mechanical problem, the brake fluid just boiled. I used a combination of down shifting, pumping and the parking brake to get it slowed enough to make the corner. Not something I want to experience again.

Peak hour in Melbourne in a Ford panel van (looks like Mad Max model) downhill towards a red light. Foot goes to the floor. Gulp.

Downshift, hand on horn, eyes wide as saucers. Right through intersection at 35mph.

Stopped eventually, rear line broken.

Twist it shut with a pair of pliers and proceed at a greatly reduced rate of knots and front brakes only.

In the middle of a huge pack of IT cars at the start of a club race at Daytona, driving an ITA Mazda RX-2. Green flag waves, we cross the line and dive down into turn 1, a 180 degree left at pit exit that wraps around behind the pits. Everyone slams on the brakes, and mine go right to the floor. The back end of an MR2 starts increasing in size rapidly, at about the same rate as my eyeballs. In the last moment, a small hole opens to my right and I dive through it, bouncing through the grass as I gradually get the car slowed down. Turned out that a front brake line had gotten cut by the inside edge of the steel rim I had put on just for that enduro race.

Well, got underneath and it looks as if the main line from the front to rear rusted apart right at the hose that connects to the rear axle.

Time to see if I can find a pre-bent line.

I drove the freshly tagged and titled 924 to work on Monday.

Exhaust clamp fell out of the holder in the rear, drug the muffler across the bridge (with bicyclists stopping to tell me the muffler is dragging)

Pulled over Downtown to try and assess the damage. Figured that if I could bungee the muffler up that I could get to work and then walk to a parts/hardware store at lunch.

In the process of this, I burned through two bungees with a few blocks in between and was trying to use a third when a trucker offered me some plumbers strap and a quarter inch bolt. The plumber strap and the bolt worked, though it fell off the mount as well, so I wrapped it around the mount.

In the process of all of this, I dropped the hot exhaust on my exposed forearm:

Yeah, that hurt. Basically sat at my desk with a bag of ice under it all day with adrenaline surging around my pain addled brain.

This is how it looks today (a day later)

The drive home in the heat and hot non-A/C, non-insulated car was not fun in the afternoon traffic.

So yeah. ARGH!
