So I drove home a '98 Honda Odyssey today for scrap value. The car has 165k miles and was advertised with a bad transmission.
I was planning on replacing the transmission and driving the wheels off, but is there any chance this trans can be fixed?
Symptoms:
Transmission does not engage until ~2200 RPM in any gear. It really only seems to be an issue in R and 1st as in the other gears it usually seems to be cruising at or above that RPM threshold.
In my (limited) experience with auto transmissions it feels kind of like a hot rod with a high stall converter.
Thoughts?
isn't that pretty much just a huge accord?
Yep. 5-speed swap isnt too tough apparently.
If you look around the interweb, you'll probably be able to find a rebuild kit but I'm not sure how long this will last or if it will fix it.

That would be one heck of 'Van![](/media/img/icons/smilies/evil-18.png)
That auto isn't bad compared to the one that came in the 2nd Gen Odysseys, but I still say do the manual trans swap if the one in it goes.
No idea on your 2200 RPM issue though, sorry!
Given most transmissions out there use reverse and low or 1st in combination, I would suspect the clutches are beat to death or the seals have hardened/cut causing the slip. The revs just spin the fluid that is pumped in to force the apply piston to apply.
Should be completely repairable, but not cheap.
I found a internal diagram and wow is all I can say.......
The trans has a "converter lockup solenoid". Could this be an issue?

Probably not. Normally when they lock up all the time, when you put it into gear, the engine will stall. If it would fail to lockup, it is just like a regular converter.
Pour in a bottle of Lucas trans fix, see what happens, if not, 5 speed.
