So my saga of making the 5R55E auto in my free 2000 Ford Ranger shift correctly has taken a dramatic turn recently: it shifts right! I replaced the valve body and separator plate, along with the first/reverse servo o-rings. This significantly helped my engagement but didn't make it shift better. Then I noticed that the lock nut was loose on the intermediate band adjuster and the whole thing had backed itself out. D'oh! Tightened it up to 10 ft lbs then backed it off two turns as the manual specifies, now it shifts excellent.

If I putt around with light throttle the whole thing sounds great and nothing is amiss. The thing is, under hard throttle I'm getting a sort of "squeal" noise from the transmission (at least I think it is) when a shift is about to happen; it gets quieter after the shift but is still present until I lift off the throttle.

The 5R55E in this guy has two adjustments; an overdrive band and an intermediate band. I did the OD band quick as well after adjusting the intermediate but I'm probably a little off on both. It's worth noting that this transmission gets "2nd gear" by engaging OD on 1st.

Could this squealing sound mean that I need to snug up a band a little bit more? Should I go for the OD or intermediate? Or should I look elsewhere? The interwebz seem to say that my transmission will stop working entirely if I mess with the bands too much, so I don't want to create a problem I don't have after finally fixing it...where could the noise be coming from?

Easy fix... The inspection cover. Take it off. You'll probably see where the flexplate was rubbing. Either leave it off or massage it with a hammer before putting it back on.

The reason its called a flexplate is because the transmission pressure wants to push the TC out of the snout. RPMs go up, pressure goes up, TC pushes on the flexplate.

My dad's old Ram did this exact same thing so I'm tempted to believe it's the flex plate. The cam synchronizer has been replaced on this thing once so I'd hope it's not bad again, plus there are no CELs or signs of oil pressure loss. I'm going to dig in more tomorrow or Monday and see if I can definitively figure it out.
