In the past I have really enjoyed HPDE events, but I am interested on a driving school that focuses on Autocross. The only one I know of is evoschool.com and they aren't having any classes anywhere near me (amarillo, Texas) in the near future. i'd be willing to go quite a ways to attend a good one. Who else does teaching sessions specifically for Autocross? Any comments good or bad on them or the evoschool folks?
I can't suggest another autocross school for you but I can say that I attended the Evo school back when it was McKamey and also the 4 day Grand Prix Road Race school at Bondurant. The Evo school was $250 and the 4 Day GPRR was $5000. I learned more and got so much more out of the Evo school then the 4 day GPRR course. It helped me in autocrossing,HPDE and when I started wheel to wheel racing. The skills Evo focuses on are great. The way they do it is also great. I can't say enough good things about the Evo school. I have no affiliation with the school but I would pay to travel and go through their courses twice what they cost before spending to go to the 4 day GPRR course.
The 4 day GPRR course was not bad and I still learned some things from it. It just is not anywhere near the value in comparison. If you are looking to improve for autocross or a certain skill or skills you could also consider looking for a driving coach more local to you instead of a pre organized school/course.
Yeah.... after my dismal performance last week in Lincoln, I need to pony up the cash for the evo school. I need to learn to drive better. And not blow struts.

steve hazzard has a class too. no personal experience.
Actually doing it is the best way so I recommend the classes (which I too would like to take) but much of the principles they will teach can be found within.

check out you local SCCA region … most regions (that support a-x) will have one or more "novice" schools each yr … the quotation marks were because you don't have to be a novice to attend
if and when an Evo school is somewhere close enough for you to attend .. do so .. they're great ..
disclaimer: with my "driving skills" I need to do the Evo thing again

The level 2 and level 3 schools from my SCCA region were great when I attended them. If I ever get back into the autocross grove I'll definitely be attending both again. The level 3 is great for even the most seasoned vet just due to the seat time, 40-50 runs in a single day.
I've been auto-x'ing since 2007. I like to think I'm better than a novice but not a seasoned vet. I'm guessing I would want the Level 1 school? I have good lines, but I'm always "off" on timing/throttle/brakes.
I have done the Evo school. Really, I need to go back. It's an awesome, focused program.
level 2, level 1 goes over the structure of an event and basics of the format, worker roles and of driving the course. Level 2 provides the best instruction within my region, most feedback and in car instruction while still getting 30+ runs throughout the day. Level 3 was pretty open and just getting in runs and practicing what you've learned previously, instructors were there but I was getting very little instruction at this point (I had vastly improved but was still looking for a few tenths)
I'm looking for... oh... say... a second or so right now. lol Wait.... according to the results, I'm looking for 1.5 per day. D'Oh!
My local scca region is 20 guys some of which happen to have some cones we throw on a parking lot once a month.

I would assume that at least a couple of them are pretty good … in lieu of a school, I would cultivate their friendship and either ask to co-drive with them… or as them to co-drive with you… or at least ride with you as often as you can get them to… with the understanding that you are open to as much instruction as they can provide
good luck
I already do that ! Also want an excuse for a cool guys weekend with my dad and brother.
+whatever on attending an Evolution Autocross school if you can...
I did Phase I and II and really learned a lot. A major SCCA region may have a "beginners" school as well.... second best bang for the buck in brushing up on Autocross/driving skills.

I was really impressed with the Atlanta region's "novice" school. It was a third of the cost of the Evo school, which is already a great deal itself. I'd suggest doing both if available.
Get ahold of Andy Hollis and see if he's teaching anything in Texas in the next little while. I have several friends that have learned from him and say he is top notch. You may have to drive over to College Station, but the HUGE concrete runway they have is really fun to drive on.
Houston also has our school once a year. The calendar says it's coming up October 4. Big region, several national champions, good people.
I can't find a schedule on the houston scca page, when is that school?

Andy knows his stuff and is a great instructor
How do you get in touch with Andy Hollis? That would be a dream come true! Is his Facebook the best method ? I can't find anything else
On the main solo page here on the far right side the next few events are listed. Rookie school is 10/4. If you wonder if it will be too basic you can contact Jan Rowe (her contact should be there somewhere) and ask her.
I'd try to get ahold of Andy through his facebook page. Other than him magically dropping in on the forums here, that's the only way I know how.
