Okay, I'm totally clueless about these things. My g/f's car ('99 Galant 4g64/auto) is having a weird issue where the trans feels like it's "catching" when stopped and in "D". Occasionally when idling, you feel a momentary kick of power come through the drivetrain. It's not enough to move the car when you're on the brakes. What could this be?

A few observations: The problem just started recently. A year or so back she had the transmission "flushed". Also, the dealer recently performed a recall that replaced the trans cooler rubber hoses. Lastly, the car was involved in a minor passenger's-side accident that required me to replace the strut and spindle. It's possible the inner workings of the trans took a hit through the axle.

Ideas/next steps?

Thanks!

Do a real trans service on it, I bet you'll find a seriously clogged filter.

In reply to skruffy:

Is there an additional filter besides the obvious external one to replace? I will be sure to replace that in addition to the ATF.

Thanks!

It's probably the engine's reaction to the AC turning on and off.

Does it do it if you have your foot a bit on the gas while on the brakes, or only at idle?

Shift valves somtimes get sticky. Fresh fluid and filter will most likely fix it. Or a qt. of Mystery Oil.

A/C is off during all these incidents.

I haven't tried putting in a bit of throttle while stopped but I can.

Okay, I will start with fresh fluid and filter.

Thanks!
