Pan is down.
Filter still attached with no visible damage.
No debris in the pan.
Nrxt steps?
There is some goodish news though. Looks like i MAY be able to drop trans independently of the engine. It will be nerve wracking and interesting use of extensions and unifersals and angles though.
No way to determine for sure without pulling the trans entirely, refitting the torque converter, resinstalling, filling with fluid, and pulling the pin.
Im scared due to research that says that the front pump doesnt liveif its been started with the torque converter missed.
Im pretty sure theres no way around it at this point though.
I'd at least pull the cover, unbolt the converter and see if it slides. You have to do that to pull the transmission anyway.
Well, if it's got to come out, deal with that first. Don't get all bent guessing about things you haven't seen yet.
Sure you filled it right? IIRC from a dry pan you have to have it in gear and running to completely fill, in order to get fluid pumped through the torque converter. Or is that Chrysler? I can't remember
This is a long shot, but I'll ask anyway.
Did you drain the TC when the trans was out?
Did you fill it as much as possible before installing it?
You may just have a lot of air in the TC so it isn't doing anything yet.
If I remember correctly the last time I replaced a TC, the instructions said to fill it before installing, and it was a slow process to get the fluid in and air out before installing on the trans.
Also, in a challenge car, you will be hours ahead to take a hole saw to the tunnel for access to the transmission bolts. Make it easy on yourself.
And, if you have good access, pull the bolts out one at a time and swap them out for longer ones to act as guide pins. Then you may be able to slide the transmission back enough to play with the converter without actually removing it.
In reply to oldopelguy:
That is berkeleying GENIUS !!!!!!!
I owe you a six pack or something.
Stampie: very little remaining recoup, as we were able to zero out everything but the lincoln.
Jstand: i dont remember draining the torque converter intentionally, but that doesn't mean we didn't. I m ow we didn't intentionally fill it back up.
If the converter was low then it may take a while for the pump to fill the converter and you won't have any gears until the TC gets enough fluid.
There is supposed to be a torque converter drain plug. It might be messy, but you could check for fluid in the TC before disassembling anything.
Trans is out. And garbage. Apparently junked the plines in the front pump.
Guy at church offered to trade me a 79 ford long bed with a 302 3 speed for the dead trans. No title, not a straight panel on it. He apparently has an aod with a bad valve body and wants mine. Truck was left by a guy that rented the shop five years ago, and kenny was goung to crush it.
But he will deliver, and i can yank the trans and sell off until I zero out the lincoln. So we are not completely berkeleyed, just partly.
Normal ratio: 2.99 1.75 1.00 R3.17 Wide ratio option: 3.26 1.91 1.00 R3.46
Im hoping normal ratio. Seems like a good fit for a light car with a broad powerband, 3.73 gears, and 27 inch tall tires.
End goal of this car was always a manual transmission. We were using an automatic because its what we had.
It also turns out that amc used a hydraulic clutch setup in the 4 cylinder spirit. Which is good, because there is no way in hell that we could fit a pushrod setup around the headers. Car still has the clutch pedal from the factory, so i have that going for me.
Just not looking forward to more work. Im ready to go racing.
That is good news, so did this happen becaust the T/C wasn't engaged or .......
the manual is going to be much better in the long run and you have everything you need + a spare engine. when you put your hands on it tell me about the rear end.
My guess is that the splines were destroyed by improper installation.
Il let you know about the rear.
Friend of mine already offered me 300 if he can hear the 302 run.
A friend in Hand is worth it. I am looking for a rear with the posi type center Of course the higher spline count would be nice too.
