What are some small rwd motors that are easy to swap into other rwd cars? Thinking junkyard prices cheap, reliable and accessible plug n play ECUs.
First thought is the Miata, because well... Miata.
next thought would be SR20’s or the 4 banger jeeps. Am I missing anything?

Miata is probably best for single donor.
Small trucks are sometimes and option but slow-spinning torque motors and uninspiring transmissions are a buzzkill.
How much hp are you wanting? Some BMWs might suit. Some old Toyota motors (3T-C, 22R, etc) But they are getting rare.

2001.5+ Rangers had the Duratec 2.3, which is a pretty decent engine to stuff into something else. I expect the shift action of the stock transmission would also probably improve a bit with a solid shift lever instead of the tube with a rubber dildo stuffed inside that it has to make the shift action extra sloppy...Although if necessary an NC Miata transmission is a direct fit as well.
Apparently the way the Ranger computer functions, it can actually even run a low-boost positive displacement supercharger without any tuning required: https://www.locostusa.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=19110
not wanting BMW's, anymore their reliability issues aren't worth it for me. the e46 i did own was terrible and a buddies bmw of similar era dies every other week. the e30 and older motors are only rising in price with the growing love for the car and as i left the states they were waning from the yards
youre correct on the small trucks, they do seem buzzkill and uninspiring but ive never driven one longer than a few minutes.
If i went miata, id probably pull the whole drivetrain out and just the motor harness. id assume megasquirt ecu's dont require anything else off a car other than those functions.
this is just a day dreaming thread for when i return anyway's.
