I don't think IMSA is a fair comparison, that's all US based and it's a whole lot easier to truck a car around than to ship it to Oz. These teams pretty much have to come from Europe. The Rolex 24 means US-based teams have to decide between that and Bathurst, and that's a pretty easy piece of budgeting to figure out. Some of the drivers might fly out, but not the cars/teams.

That's probably more of an indicator of how popular GT3 racing is in Australia, or at least GT3 under SRO.
The expense probably makes sense for European teams to beat their cars up around Mt. Panorama to prepare for Spa and Nurburgring 24s.
They don't bother coming to the Indy 8H even though it's under the same championship.
Is Bathurst 12 even part of a series, though? I thought it was a standalone like the N24. In that regard it probably makes sense for the fields to be thin. I imagine most of the cars are NZ/Aus-based with just labor coming from the EU.
SRO does promote both GT3 and GT4 series in Australia, though, so clearly there's a market. Maybe it's just not worth the stretch for a GT4 effort knowing you won;t get much TV time and there's a highly nonzero change of tearing up a car.

they're all part of the SRO Intercontinental GT Challenge https://www.intercontinentalgtchallenge.com/
but as suggested the races are more important than the championship like Le Mans and Indy 500
