Picture a basic FWD engine bay (1st gen neon). Im looking at moving my battery to the passenger side firewall. The header on my motor is on the back of the head. How close is too close for a battery by the header? Where im looking at putting it would be about a foot away from the header. Im thinking thatll be too close. But maybe not? Add heat sheilding and it could survive ok? The battery is going to be an oddesey PC680, if thatll make a diffrence. I know heat and batteries, genrally dont get along. But how much could I get away with here?
Batteries don't like heat, so I'd either plan to put it somewhere cooler, or heat shield it and try to get some cooler air to the battery area (maybe just seal it off from the rest of the engine bay).
Yeah, batteries + heat are no bueno.
You could get some of that thermal tape to see how hot it actually gets there, or use a thermocouple in a multimeter to get an idea of how hot it gets. Some cars are pretty hot up along the hoodline, and others are not - kind of depends on how well the cowl is sealed and what kind of airflow there is.
Factory battery location is in the position you propose in my E30 for convertible and some other global models. No heat shielding on that.

Daily driver? Or track toy/weekend car? That would probably decide it for me.
The DD I'd keep the stock location. The toy I'd try anything. Heat shielding sounds like a great idea, as does monitoring the actual temperature.
Umm...
Bumper mounted like fattirebicycles used to do with a pdc relocate bracket?

not a daily, its an interiorless toy that seems weekend track time, and some street time.

The bumper idea is one ive thought about. but Ive always been kinda concerned with front impact and having a battery in the front corner like that. Perhaps nothing to be worried about at all maybe?

Having done a rotisserie restoration on my Neon, there is really no difference in safety between the Factory location in the bumper mount in my mind. Any hit hard enough to get to the one is going to do in the other as well.
I don't know what the engine bay totally looks like, but do you have room down low along the passenger side frame rail?
In reply to 79rex :
If interior-less then how about passenger footwell, inside? Generally, just the other side of the passenger side fire wall. Use some good grommets and heavy coated cable for running lines through the firewall.

not having fender liners and potentially throwing rain/road grime in its direction was another thought that ran through my head
The battery in my RX-7 is mounted in the hottest part of the interior - on the right side at the kickup where all the exhaust heat goes. I have had rubberized gloves melt to the floor.
Battery is more damaged by not keeping a battery tender on it when I am not driving than by the heat.
I do have it in a marine box, which probably helps with the heat issue.

Look at Jaguar. They put a fan on their battery.
Can't be worse than a Saab C900 turbo.
