The battery in my RX-7 died... again (I had it recharged, but it didn't hold the charge for very long). It's a massive ~40lb. 35-series battery so I would like to replace it with a lighter battery. The car will see 3-season daily driving and autocross duty and be stored in the winter. The RX-7 is a battery hog so something with a decent amount of juice is required. Any suggestions?

The Odyssey PC925 series is a pretty ballsy battery. http://www.odysseybatteries.com/battery/pc925series.htm

i've got the smaller pc680 in my M3 and i love it but youve got to be a little careful about lights/radio as its really a motorcycle battery. but the 925 is much bigger and still only 24 pounds. i found mine online for a lot less than their website's msrp too.

I'm interested in the PC925T battery WilberM3 suggested, but there is a problem. It is much shorter than the stock battery (5 9/16" tall vs. 8 7/8" tall) and the battery box and hold-down are too tall for the Oddy battery. Will a wood block underneath the battery to rise the height pass a typical SCCA Solo tech inspection or will I need to get a different battery hold-down?

Different hold down.

+1 on an Optima though. The one for the Miata is tall but skinny and lighter than the lead acid or OEM style batteries and it has more than enough juice.

In reply to RexSeven:

since its a sealed cell battery you can mount it in any orientation if the other dimensions work with the stock holddown. or you could always just make a new one.

On the GRM side of things - find an interstate distribution center - new, cosmetic blemish batteries are $20

My redtop has been going strong in 4 different cars since 2004. Despite being deep discharged several times it still cranks out tons of juice.

I'm not sure they still make them like they used to though.
