Reviving this thread again, because I took the plunge.
Some of you might have seen this in my build thread, but I decided to buy DelTran's new LiFePO4 (Lithium Ferrous) battery. It's a fantastic deal, because it already has the cell balancing board pre-installed. 140 dollars shipped to my house on Amazon. 2 pounds 1 ounce in "ready to install" condition (two top terminals added, and a couple of velcro strips to keep it in one place).

I've had it in the car for three days, covered a few hundred miles. On Thursday night I drove the car out to Bowling league, parked for 3 hours, and drove it home. On Friday I drove it to work, parked for 9 hours, then drove it home. Saturday I went for a cruise with a bunch of 914 guys that was about 150 miles round trip with several stops for photos, fuel, food, and various others.
So far, it has acted like a perfectly normal battery. It doesn't get hot, it doesn't slow-start, and it doesn't mind daily use.
We'll see how it does when the weather turns cold again.
