IIRC, Saleen was able to get mid 15's with the supercharged XP8. You could turn up the boosts.

I do like the idea of a GRM Landy though...especially the Bobtail idea these guys have:

Easy take a crashed Camaro with ls1, and a xj which we already know can be made to handle and put them together. Novakengineering even makes everything to bolt the swap in.

Add some sound deadening and leather seats.... Done!

I second the LS-swapped Land Rover idea. Not sure what can be done for handling with off-the-shelf parts, but off the shelf parts dont tend to play into my car hobby very much anyway.

I love XJs but i wouldnt call them comfortable.

Monteros come with a range of very high-power-proven v6s (the sohc 3.0 has done over 500hp and the dohc 3.5 has done over 1000hp) but im not sure about the handling stuff again, probably mostly have to figure it out yourself.

My good friend Randy had a montero with a twinturbo 6g74 on MS and boy...that thing was not meant to go fast but it was so fast. It dyno'd over 500hp. It didn't last very long though. The motor took itself out one day.

I think if you built bottomend and got some arp headstuds with a legit headgasket then you could have a reliable superSUV. Ah I miss the MonTurbo

In reply to pimpm3:

Problem is.... I priced all that out because I was thinking a 4.8 for a nice gain but small enough power it would still play nice with my 5spd.

The swap stuff is eye-wateringly expensive.

Should be easy enough to find. They roll like ping pong balls and are driven by people way over their heads.

The OPP and RCMP up here use tons of 2wd Tahoes with the 5.3L and the police package. They routinely show up on the Gov Auction websites for under $5K.

This one is right at $5K for the min bid:

How about a Nissan patrol gq with a boosted rb30, possibly with a rb25 head. That is assuming patrols are available in the us and prices are similar to what's available here in oz.

Cool forum by the way guys.

The thing is, they are probably WAY more roll resistant than many other cars in this thread.

The DiscoII has a height of 74" and a track of 60". Scary.

With borderline acceptable SSF (height >= track) cars being banned from autox, and others going up/over on 2 wheels on street tires now, I'd be scared E36 M3less putting sticky tires on something tippy like the Disco II or Montero.

Forester XT. Add Sti suspension parts, a bit more power, and you would have a very quick SUV. Autos seem to be cheap and all over the place. The manuals seem to cost a lot more. Maybe something like this with a manual trans swap, still under 5k total...

Land Rover actually puts some effort into making their vehicles roll resistant for off roading purposes. I was reasonably impressed by my Disco II' s ability to corner with rear springs instead of bags and later rover wheels/wide tires.

Oh, well as long as it blew ITSELF up then i guess we can all protect our self-image and continue regarding Mitsubishis as unreliable and everything will be grand!

$5k would buy an awful lot of go-fast bits for the 6.5T in my Suburban, but that's probably opening a can of worms, and that engine will never make streetable modern power reliably. Maybe parting a wrecked Duramax would be the answer... or a 6bt, since the adapters are out there. Couple that with some fresh Bilsteins, big sways, a slight drop. I like where this is going in my head. I wish I didn't.

the 4472 awd transfer case from the typhoon/syclone/bravada/astro has been proven to hold a very good amount of power. I cant speak for the front diff though

I've had the desire to build a 1st gen CRV with what ever boosted up b-series hybrid you can fit under the hood. B20 vtec with a turbo or even an old Jackson Racing supercharger kit, add suspension, soup.

A buddy of mine built an old Grand Wagoneer with a 5.3 and 4L60E. Very nice combo, but it wasn't capable performance wise as it was so dang heavy.

+1 on the AWD Explorer + supercharger. The 5.0 sounds amazing and it handled predictively ok in stock form. I can only imagine what a set of bilsteins and some lowering blocks would do for it.

Someone even drove one in the Pikes Peak Hillclimb.

For all the guys suggesting an XJ, why not start with a Grand Cherokee for added comfort? If you can make an XJ handle, you should be able to make a GC handle. Plus some came already equiped with a V8.

They're way heavier and I don't know if they lower as easily.

The transmissions suck, too. XJ trans will hold power.

I own a Montero ( my 2nd, along with 4 previous cherokees and a Rodeo as far as SUVs) and i agree with that.

Also, on the Grand Cherokee thing im pretty sure they lower more or less identically to XJs (other than rear coils vs leaves) but the trans thing is kind of huge. The dodge trannies can be built to hold a lot of power, but they have to be rebuilt to do it. The AW4 will handle a lot without ever being opened.

Yea I'd probably agree with the Exploder as well, despite knowing and liking XJs, they are easier going up than they are going down.

Giggity.
