How about a MK VIII powertrain? Them are cheap now. With some creativity, you can swap in both front and rear subframes.
I hear P71 has one to part with....

Why, not a thing!
In my case, my '82 2wd with a Granny gear low 4 speed (ergo, direct 4th gear, no OD), was fine up to about 55-58 mph before the mileage took a dump. At 65 mph, the best I ever got was 14 mpg. Of course this was in Eastern Montana, and dealing with lots of rolling hills. Maybe in flatter country, mileage would be better. The best part of the 300/6 was the low end. It was great in town, and I wish from time to time I hadn't traded it. It was a fun truck in a lot of ways, but not real family friendly for a kid needing a car seat, being a standard cab.
The '82 was also carburated, with the little Carter 1 barrel...that may have been part of the mileage issue. Who knows?
At any rate, thus began my association with vans large and small.
1996 Dodge Ram Cummins Turbo Diesel
Box ass stock engine aside from 4" MBRP exhaust, Team Hack intake, Team Hack modified pump.
Fully built ATS trans with billet converter, billet apply levers, retooled valve body.
22 MPG to DBQ, IA from Milwaukee WI averaging 70 MPH.
245K miles.
I love my truck.
In reply to Mikey52_1:
Mine was EFI with the OD/5. It was good uptill 75ish. Looked like the AOD had the same Highway rating.

Yeah, I figured the discrepancy had to be the OD and the EFI. The carbed 300's weren't known as mileage kings.
