I would love to know the criteria for this type of evaluation, because based on use, longevity, use in other platforms, etc., any list like this that doesn't have the SBC and SBF #1 and #2, respectively, is full of E36 M3.
They have outlived multiple generations of platforms and adapted through over 60 years of change (less than that for the Ford, but still close to 50 years). When they came out we were still just talking about spaceflight. Now we are talking about sending people to Mars. Their derivatives are still running.
Best at WHAT? I can name several engines that are better, depending on the criteria.
My criteria is "runs forever". I name the M-B OM 616/617 Diesels and the Volvo redblocks, followed closely by the MoPar Slant6.
Yeah, the SBC to me would have to be number 1.
No LSx? no ford 300ci I6? no 1UZ? no 2JZ?

I think the only fair way to compare engines across time is to assess their reliability and HP/liter against their contemporaries, and then rank them by how much they stood out.
I hate those lists of 10 best whatever. I think they just throw a bunch of names in a jar and draw them out randomly. Their only purpose is to get traffic to their website.
the included article speaks of engine downsizing, and for the most part, I've been fine with that. But they also speak of engine downspeeding. That is, spinning the engine slower, for greater economy. the days of a high revving 4 cylinder are numbered, or already over. The article speaks of engine speeds extremely similar to diesel engines. That makes me sad. I really enjoy hitting higher revs. the sound of the engine, and the vibration through the car make you feel like you're going faster than you are. Today's cars, though faster, and better performers than ever, are all so isolated, you don't feel the speed till you're long into the take my license range.
I've just been hit with the realization that when a old guy says they don't build em like they used to and gets all misty eyed......that's going to be me when I think of the days you could buy a car off the showroom floor and rev it to 7- 8k.

the Honda bias is strong, and even off base, you can't tell me that a B series is better then a K series.
And no 22re. What the frick!?!? Those engines have LITERALLY ran a million miles. They pulled a 22re hilux out of an Alaskan river and fired it up and drove it home. Not kidding.

Facebook is for easily transmitting cute pictures of my kids to their Grandparents. Other than that I haven't found a real use for it.
