After 5+ years of sitting in the sun, the numbers and class stickers on my Camaro are starting to flake pretty badly. But while the vinyl is coming off great, the sticky stuff absolutely refuses to come off.

What's the best bet for removing the sticky stuff, but not the paint?

Tom Suddard used an eraser wheel on the sunburst Miata just before it died a horrible death.

3M general purpose adhesive cleaner. It's available at most auto parts stores.

A heat gun to soften the stickers, a plastic scraper to remove them, and then the 3M adhesive remover.

Stuart, Jim: thank you. At the risk of saying something obvious, adhesive remover is pretty berkeleying awesome for removing adhesive.

Know what it's not good for? Killing wasps. Turns out one had taken up residence in my passenger mirror and was displeased at my activities. It flew down my shirt.

Ever seen a grown man running around his yard, screaming like a little girl, open can of adhesive remover splashing everywhere in one hand while simultaneously trying to rip off his t-shirt with his other hand?

My neighbors have.

Eraser wheels are one of the few things I've ever used that worked better than I could have possibly imagined.
