Whats the best user-friendly scan tool for a 99 Porsche 911 Cabrio non-turbo.  Coworker got one, wants to be able to see data and codes.  Is this something where the absolute cheapest is still OK or do Porsches use something odd where it pays to get a higher end tool?

The low end....

My Mercedes used all sorts of special codes over OBD that were only readable with an OEM scan tool or a clone, the really bad thing was the cheaper OBD scanners would mis-read the data so you would get a lot of red herrings.  Is Porsche similar?

Durametric.  It's worth it.

+1 for Durametric. Professional one (unlimited VIN) is expensive but you can find Enthusiast ones (limited to 3 VIN's when new) with 1-2 VIN's remaining for cheap.
