I am partial to the 88-91 Civic and CRX for obvious reasons, they are plenty cheap, lots of support, lots of fun, if you add the right engine plenty fast too. Good starter car at the least.

I agree w/ Mr. G-P-S that an e30 is an awesome car. When I bought the e36 M3 I didn't have counting heat cycles on Hoosier R6s in mind - if I was starting from scratch I'd probably go e30 for the low running costs and reliability.

I would take a Caterham, because of the bonkers performance and looks for so little price. The best ones are probably the Supersport R, the midrange, for 24,995 pounds ($37,500), and the Superlight R400, for 32,995 pounds ($50,000).

If you want to spend more money, then a KTM X-Bow or an Aerial Atom would be your best bet.

All of these are probably the best track day cars, because the companies know that you probably aren't going to use them on the road very much, so there aren't any creature comforts.
