I am going to try to convince my g/f to do this with me in a couple years.

Why wait? Do it this year! It can easily be done on a budget. Life is for living, not for postponing.

Because I am building up a Spitfire racecar and helping with a Challenge car.

Weaksauce. I did BABE. Lemons. And GRM in the same year. ;)

Using the same car is cheating.

The Spit needs a shakedown run. Trust me, we built it during the bad union era ;)

I've actually visited the site where they built the Spitfire - it's a housing estate now. Which is probably best.

It would have been easier with separate cars. There's a reason only 2 teams have done the ToC

New goal become 3rd team. If I had the money or space to swing it, I totally would this year. Next year.

Some news just in. In the past there has always been some lively discussion about how the car didn't factor into the win on the rally. A team that really gets it and brings a heap has only an equal chance to beat a team with a better car. Not to mention the realities of piloting a true banger mean you can't always focus on maximum points on the daily challenges.

So for this year there is the addition of bonus points based upon the vehicle.

In reply to JThw8:

Much needed in my opinion. We felt like we were very much at a disadvantage and opted out of any hope of "winning" after day 1. Though there should be a sliding scale on the 4 wheel drum option. 4000lbs and 4 wheel drums can get interesting, a 4 wheel drum 2300lb beetle is just vaguely interesting.

And there ought to be a minus 1000 points for anything built post 2002.

Also what kind of numbers generally "win" BABE? Are we talking about 1000 points being a 10% advantage or a 1% advantage?

I like it. Too bad they didn't do that when we ran. I was told by several people that we had the crappiest looking car there, and I was proud to hear it every time. My 6th place finish could have become a podium!

Absolutely needed and I agree with you. Although I won with a beetle which was as painful as your bus it was many parts luck that got us there. Your vehicle choice can put you at an advantage or disadvantage and now the points reflect that.

In helping Justin "Americanize" the list I tried to keep it simple. The first draft was just too many things to check for. So no sliding scales or anything, no mechanical checklist. The 1000 point "General Condition" is the sliding scale and will allow the judge to ensure the teams get handicapped correctly for their vehicle choice.

Anything built after 1998 is not eligible to win.

The top 5 spots are generally separated by less than 1000 points...so yes, vehicle choice just became VERY important.

Oh, and is that minus 350 for German/Swedish marques, or does the car actually have to be made there? If it's the marque, I would have certainly argued that the Fox was Brazilian.

Unfortunately sometimes we can only learn from the past. This has been something that Justin has wanted to do for some time but resisted because he didnt want to scare away parts of the audience. But it's become clear its the right thing to do, especially in the US where we seem to try and on up each other on the crappy scale every year.

I am glad to see the Maserati Biturbo is given a 750 point advantage.
750 points for Biturbo
250 points for Italian
250 points for 1985

1250 free points and this is before fur or costume!

My guess is it is still not enough.

It still has to make it to the finish. And although not explicitly stated in the list, it must have a stock drivetrain to qualify for the bonus.

We're contemplating a local 2cv(if we can get ahold if it)

Under 1.0L: 1000

at newest 1975: 750

French: 350

convertable:250

aircooled: 250

drums 250

2850 points before decoration, theme or any challenges.

But I'm not sure we'd actually make it to Staten Island, much less the French Quarter.

a) you're sick b) convertible only counts if you dont have a top. ie. you intend to go open air all week.

On that note I just reminded another team that in 6 years there has never been a rain free BABE rally.

In reply to JThw8:

I don't think there is a top on the car.. or seat cushions(just springs).. extrapolate to the rest of the car.

In all seriousness I'm not sure that it would actually work. With a realistic cruising speed of 35mph, we'd be a serious hazard on the interstate.

Sorry Corey, missed that one. Can't give a firm answer other than there is some judicial discretion. There's an active discussion with more detail on the BABE forum if you want some clarification.
