The rule points actually say:
German/Swedish (you know, the boring reliable ones).
My guess is that this is to discourage Benz diesels and Volvo 240's. Sure they have 300k miles on them but we all know they will still run strong. A VW Fox or even VW Bug do not fall into that category (in my opinion.)

The VW bug get's the points back by being aircooled and 4 wheel drum.
Its meant to discourage Volvos and MK2/MK3 VWs but in general the organizers are tired of the US rally looking like the UK rally, they brought the event here to see american cars. So there's a general euro distaste. But there are exceptions to every rule and some subjective judging done at check in.

Just a few weeks into the registration period and already this is getting very interesting. Alot of people seem to have taken to the vehicle points bonus challenge and the spec station wagon theme.
Already we have one confirmed hearse and 2 others in negotiations
A monster 1970s mercury wagon ready to consume fossil fuels at alarming rates
A 1968 Toyota station wagon unicorn
plus a fiat 850, an engine swapped MGBGT and ???
It really seems everyone is trying to out weird everyone else this year and its just starting, I think the "arms race" escalation on this thing could get insane.
And you wont be there because..........?

get a few teammates the costs spread out pretty well and you might even sleep in a hotel a night or two. But there have been a few car campers through the years. Dont be afraid to ask to borrow someones shower in their room though, I'd rather loan ya my shower than have a 5 day funk goin ;)

Ms Mental just figured our gas budget for the event. It's bad. But oh what style....
I dare anyone to outdo that.
Thats right, dare...
The man won't let me off that week, but If I can sneak out for a day I will get sail out to that festering swamp and see the start anyway.

Year before last, the BABE drove right past my house. There I was in the mountains, about as far from anybody as I could think, when suddenly it became a zoo!
Still have my BABE hopeful, just unable to git-r-dun.
The new points bonuses aren't gonna be much help to me, though I can think of no more BABE worthy monstrosity than a Miata powered by a 300D turbo-diesel that won't even fit under the hood.
Well, I guess I can at least get the convertible points!
Maybe someday...

There are condition points and theme points (which includes WTF factor) and you have an "in" with the guy doing the scoring, you might do ok ;)

You have a point.
Topless, yes. Convertible, no.
I'll bet it would earn me extra points, being willing to drive it in the rain with NO top.

There is a 250 point bonus for convertibles with no top. No points if you have a top. And we have never had a rain free event. :)

So I'm contemplating this jewel for next years ride. It's not local so I'm awaiting the status report from a friend that lives in the area.
1968 Toyota Crown wagon, I like the obscure!
Very late to this, but is there a status update on whether or not this was acquired??? That would be a pretty epic car do take on a long trip. I'm more of a fan of the 71-74 Kujira Crowns, but this will do just fine in terms of coolness.
Also--updates on the Biturbo???

This has been acquired, there's another thread around here somewhere about it. Short version is we got it cheap, it runs but is noisy when warm, my friend who has the car down in VA until I can get it suspects the bottom end bearings....ew. Needs clutch hydraulics rebuilt (parts already acquired) and carb rebuilt, one of the Lemons guys does asian carb rebuilds for a living so the carb is on the way to him and he promises to make her purr.
If the bottom end is bad we will try to replace the bearings, I'd like to keep her mostly stock. If its too far gone then Im going to suck it up and find a donor for a 5M or 7M swap. Or maybe just a 350.
The bi-turbo isnt mine, I just got word that a new team took up the bi-turbo challenge and has one ready to go, Im afraid I dont know much more than that.

That is awesome, dude--despite how disgusting the interior was--ugh. The PO was really miserable.
Anyway--if you're still looking for wheels, these are mine up on ebay at the moment--

If they don't sell, I'd even be willing to meet you somewhat halfway to save you the shipping costs. I've never ended an auction before, but I could if you're interested. Just a thought...
