So, many of you guys chipped in to my thread in searching for the right Explorer after I had found a few interesting ones. I was set to go see the good option yesterday, but it snowed 6" in the owner's area and nothing was cleared; I couldn't go see it. Disappointment ensued.
A few hours later I got a text from a family friend that they are selling their 2000 Ford Expedition with 128k miles that they bought new. Berkeley yeah. Went and got it today (with a family and friends discount), and man is it great. This one is the XLT with the 4.6 liter V8. It's definitely bigger than an Explorer, but it's so roomy and is supposed to get about the same gas mileage. All leather, including the removable 3rd row. The owner understands cars very well (he has an S2000 and follows the "Top Always Down" mantra when he drives it) and kept it maintained perfectly. Just had an oil change, upper control arms, and sway bar linkages done about 2 weeks ago. I already have some leather cleaner and conditioner on order (there was a groupon for Lexol products ) and I'll probably try to get a wash and wax in soon if we get some balmy weather. I'm more than thrilled to have something comfortable, reliable, and functional. Thanks to all who chimed in with advice and personal experience! Sometimes, things have a way of working out.
