I too have a soft spot for 2nd gen. F-bodies. My first/high school car was a '77 Firebird Formula--Buccaneer Red.

Yes. I ruled.

Hmm, one of the more interesting cars able to be found in my area, How much did these weigh and what can make them more fun to drive, strictly handling wise, got the motor part covered.

I have a 72 Firebird. I converted it to 4 wheel discs from a 79 WS6 car. I also added the WS6 front and rear springs, sway bars, new polyurethane bushings, WS6 quick ratio steering box, and koni adjustible shocks up front. All of that made a huge difference over the stock base steering, suspension, and brakes. There are full suspension kits out there that are better, but $$$, so I just bought a totalled 79 WS6 T/A and took all the good stuff off it, including the 4 speed. Normally I wouldn't have hacked up an original WS6 W72 car, but this one was a real mess and wasn't #s matching.

As far as weight I'm not sure, but I plan to weigh it in the next few months. I got rid of the heat and AC, no power accesories, sound deadening, etc, so hopefully it is lighter than expected.

You know...as I look at "older cars", I'm AMAZED at how light the "old boats" are compared to so many newer vehicles.

2nd gens are heavy, but not insanely heavy. Most street cars are in the 2900-3200lb range depending on what you do to it, and losing weight is easy. I'm shooting for 2500lbs before ballast.

The front suspension geometry is actually pretty good (double a-arm) and the rear leafs aren't as much of a hinderance as one might think. They can also swallow a good bit of tire. The off-the-shelf Hotchkiss stuff works pretty well.

Combine that with the fact that they take any GM motor, and it's a pretty fun and cheap package.
