BMW 335d I like I like...

I attended a BMW 3 Series Comparison drive yesterday. We got to compare the new 328xi vs 3 of it's competitors on a short auto-x style course. We also had to opportunity to drive the 335i and the new 335d

The competition was an Audi A4 2.0T, Merc C300 AWD and the Lexus IS250 AWD. I think the course we designed to really showcase what BMW is good at and highlight what the competitors were really bad at but it still was fun.

My favourite car by far was the 335d. My god the torque! First gear isn't that impressive but when the autobox slotted into 2nd, whoa nelly! You can really feel the torque difference between the 335i and the 335d.

The 335d sounds pretty good too, a tiny bit diesely at idle but sounds like a proper car under throttle.

After the event they showed us the new Z4. Oh man is it ugly.

The folding metal roof is neat though...

I'd love a 335d, but an 'as tested' price of almost $56k?? That's from the C&D test article.

That's a lot of coin for a 3-series.

335d's are dropping into the mid $20's thanks to german car depreciation.

Any love for these or any knowledge how they've held up?

As a mostly highway commuter I keep coming back to drooling over that torque # in a 3-series with respectable efficiency.

Like the D, even have one on GT5 hatchback, but they need to lower price, for it to catch on.

If they're anything like the 335i, I'm terrified of the fuel/injection pumps, injectors, emissions equipment, etc, etc

This. And I want to say the fist couple years had an issue with the turbos and wastegates to the point of having to extend the warranty to 8 years/84k. But that won't cover the high pressure fuel pumps...

I wish they would of made a 135d.

The current (last?) 1 series is probably my favorite BMW in years.

They definitely make diesel 1 series, just not here. For that matter, they make other diesel 3 series. The 335d is only unique in that it has an overkill diesel motor in it.

75/25 that the engine sound is from the audio system.

Well exactly. That's the appeal. :-p

It's almost a no compromise commuter. Tire roasting torque. Respectable highway mpg's.
