there is so much fail in this story, I don't know where to start.

I think I'll start with the guy's orange hat and his comment that he "can't understand why he lost traction." Hmm...ice + RWD + heavy car + probably bald summer tires.

Reminds me of a neighbor last winter who told me that her Explorer V8 could get out of the 2 feet of snow here better than my 4Runner because it had a V8 and "more grond clearance." Of course, I had deep-tread A/T tires, and she had bald highway tires. She got exactly 9 feet ouf of her driveway. She couldn't understand why her 4WD wouldn't get her though it. Had no clue that her tires had 3/32" of tread left.

That video was misnamed. "Atlanta snow causes BMW fire"? Snow didn't cause that fire. The driver's cluelessness caused the fire. I hope if the insurance company pays for his car, they at least send him some literature explaining that snow is slippery and full application of the throttle won't help in that situation.

Oughta think about the driving school where they spray stuff down to eliminate traction so he doesn't cook the next one...

saw that on the weather channel also

http://www.weather.com/outlook/videos/todays-top-forecast-4276?link=most_recent#19276

an another note the weather ran a story on brakes and how to use them in differing traction conditions...... granted the driver was in a SUV of some sort (imagine that) but MY GOD it took more than 125' to stop from 38mph .... on dry pavement.....

Srsly . . .

This reminds of the my first snow storm in Cola SC about 10 years ago. It was quite amazing watching a guy in his sc'd Cobra on drag radials trying to move out of his parking spot . . . "It's over heating and oil temps are through the roof . . ." No E36 M3.

I refused to pull him out with my truck. I don't think my conscience would sit right helping darwin out on that one.

I bet Mr e39 was living with a leaking valve cover gasket, under normal driving conditions the oil leaks on the catalytic converters and makes a nasty smell. Under extreme conditions, like sitting stationary with a wide open throttle, the cats would get hot enough to ignite the oil.

At least all the snow and ice was gone from the road at that spot. He was just helping clear the road.

The drivers first statemet on the video is, "I was loosing traction and I could not understand why."
Really???
The traction control must not be working.

Also note at about 20 sec. into the video. He has the car in reverse at what looks like a pretty high speed. Glad I do not have to shre the road with him!

The raw, unedited footage was available yesterday morning; it was a random incident caught on film. Atlanta is still shut-down because we received 5" - 6" of snow and then a nice coating of frozen rain.

Anyway, the reporter initially commented on how the rear tires had overheated to the point of catching fire. The driver was on full-throttle and the tires never caught traction; go figure, the road was coated with ice. The car ended-up parked in front of the camera set-up and flames started to appear under and slightly behind the engine compartment. Our esteemed reporter deemed the cause as excessive heat from the rear tires.

Neither guy comes across as particularly bright. But, at least someone around here put their free time to good use:
