I found a pretty nice 87' E30 for sale last night, 87' 140k, no rust, great body, needs a battery and a muffler for under $1k. Only problem I have is that the car is an automatic and I'm not sure if it is a base 325 or an is. How hard and how expensive would a manual trans swap be on an e30?

Idk if it can be told of not from this picture whether the car is a e or an is.

Search www.R3vlimited.com for engine bay photos. The I and e cars have ver different looking intake manifolds.

Trans swap? Anywhere from $500-1000 depending on what kind of deals you can find.

It may be an iS but I can't be sure - it looks like there's a trunk spoiler and the headrests look like they're on sport seats. The transmission swap is straightforward as long as you have all the parts (transmission, pedals, clutch parts, driveshaft, console, etc.) Of course it's easiest if you can find a manual trans parts car and get everything you need at one time.

BTW I like the Fairlane in your avatar...I had a '69 Torino GT notchback when I was in college.

I woulda put the price of the swap around $100-500, depending on how you acquired the parts. Ideally a dead 325e that has no value, buy a sachs clutch kit, badda bing.

Maybe I'll take a look at the car this weekend if I have the time. I could deal with an automatic for a little while, the last 3 or 4 I've driven have all been manuals and now Im doing more city driving anyway. Mostly Im just tired of fwd.

I'll take a look at the intakes, good tip.

Funny you say you had the fairlane in college, I am in college too but it is only my project vehicle/money pit. 68' Fairlane 500 Sedan with lots of goodies.

I have learned to estimate high. A new clutch kit and slave cylinder are going to be around $250. Most used good condition G260s sell for $200-300, might as well buy a E36 shifter and new bushings, etc.

That's me though.

If I've got something off or access to it during a job, I replace it then. I'm not waiting til later.

I HATE doing things twice.
