Re, Shakespeare/Nunneries: Hamlet famously told Ophelia to "Get thee to a nunnery", cautioning her against being a "breeder of sinners". I suspect that would mean he probably didn't want her working at a whorehouse.
I've heard "nunnery" in other usage as well.
