GRM had the nice bit about supercharging the 4 cylinder, now how about the 6? It's a nice motor. A turbo and megasquirt might go over well.

On a related note, my understanding is that the 325ix is one of the rare cars that is well suited to an AWD locost configuration, as the front diff isn't integrated into the oilpan or the tranny. Is this correct? And how much power will that tranny handle?

For one stop shopping, call up Todd DeHate at http://www.turbochargingdynamics.net/ They have a very nice turbocharging system for the baby six and big six BMWs. If you want to build your own setup, some people have used the exhaust manifold off a 524td diesel as a start. The front diff in a 325iX is separate from the oilpan. I'm not sure how much power it will handle, but I would suspect it's robust enough to take anything a regular rear wheel drive e30 can. Plus, if you were using it in a Locost application, the vehicle weight would be a lot less which should help. I've never heard of anyone using the ix drivetrain to build a Locost, but it would be an interesting concept (I have a 325ix, and when the day comes that it's too rusty to drive anymore maybe that could be my next project.)

He did a really nice job on the turbo setup. Can't remember the specifics, but he did it right (cut no corners) and the install is really clean.

There was a 325ix on Craigslist with $200K miles in good shape for $1,500 or so. It was gone within 24 hours.

From further internet surfing, it seems that the 2.5 takes boost well. I'm surprised more folks don't do it. The M50 swap's more common.

and here I always wondered how hard it would be to turbo a Bimmer inline engine.. especially the way they are ALL canted over to the right to keep the hood line low

i have an E30 eta and a turbo off a mk2 MR2...

thought has crossed my mind, eta has higher compression IIRC, its an automatic, AND its my DD, so i really want stock reliability (i have my doubts it would be much faster then my cobra when done anyways)

Many folks have used the eta bottom end with the I head for a low compression engine that breaths and boosts well.
