Being the owner of an '00 Impreza, I'm shocked, amazed and embarrassed that I didn't come to the same conclusion.

Camrys are rarely my answer.... Just in this case when the OP is asking for something DIFFERENT.
v6 5spd coupe + boost would certainly be something different....

A boosted Camry would definitely be different, but can it be done by a back yard mechanic under his budget?

There's a couple on there and Craigslist is always interesting in the metropolitan areas. In this down economy, the deals are there to be had!
I'm in total agreement with the Subie, or the Turbo Volvo.
The E30...well, everything seems expensive about them. There's like a standard price jacking for anything that bolts to a BMW.

What's servicing the Impreza like? I seem to remember hearing that projects like changing the spark plugs being a huge pain.
A 96-00 RS 2.5 would be a great little car aside from that, and fear of breaking the transmission.

Dunno, I only benchrace subes...never owned one...I guess I could see it being a pain considering how crazy the manifold is on that sucker, but every car is hard to work on until you get to know it (coming from someone who has only ever wrenched I4's, I guess Ive had it easy)

Well I did own one and I still can't tell you. I never had to fix anything on that car.

Easily.
A Camry with a passable body in running shape can be found for $1000 or under. Leaving.... quite a chunk for whatever direction you want to take.
If it's already a V6/manual, just do some breathing mods and put a decent suspension on it. V6 Camrys are NOT slow to start with.
If you find one with a toast motor for like $500, dump a 3sgte in there. (AllTrac, GT4, MR2 Turbo motor)
Anything you can do to a Celica/MR2, you can really do to a Camry. The Camry actually makes some things easier, as they did come with V6s stock, and the manual trannys attached to those V6s are RIDICULOUSLY strong.
For instance, i'm using a late model Solara V6 tranny (camry had the same one), and 89-91 V6 Camry axles in my build.

The steering and brakes sucked on the Camry. Not much fun to drive.

What about a 91-94 Sentra SE-R?
Many people have commented to me that they handle like pigs, but my four door with suspension always felt quick in corners.
I don't think I've EVER heard anyone say an SE-R sentra of that vintage handled like a pig. They're pretty brilliant for what they are, and have a lot of potential if you keep in mind the limited travel and don't lower it (much).

Easy fixes.... i can honestly count on one hand how many cars i liked the way they felt, stock.

The spark plugs aren't particularly tough but anything closer to the center of the engine is increasingly tough such as just about any seal on the thing.

Alright, next one... Mk2 Golf GTi?
How do they handle?
1.8t drop in?
Is it cheap fun like a SE-R is cheap fun?
get a 5spd altima. there are plenty of performance parts for KAs

Taiden,
The Mk2 Glof/GTi is a good choice. They handle really well and they're fairly light. They are definitely cheap fun like a SE-R.
A 1.8t swap can be done, but the electrics are a bit tricky. Beyond that, the 1.8t engines are really expensive to buy used (figure $1800+). A VR6 would be an easier swap.
I think an adapter plate that attaches a turbo rotary engine to a FWD transmission would be a fun project. Add a mild port and a big turbo and install in a MK1 MR2 or Fiero (or similar Mid engine mongrel) and make silly fun noises.

Fixed
LOL just kidding...That sounds fun, but wouldnt all that rev cause a FWD to push pretty bad? just my .02
