I bought an S with fewer miles than that for not a whole lot more. I also looked at a lot of cars before I pulled the trigger.

Honestly I would buy the Caymen but I don't think the Caymen is down to the same price so I think for me I would choose the BRZ or Boxster.
If you just want to own your first Porsche, buy an earlier Boxster S. They can be found for $15k and less.
In the same vein, I bought this in November, for slightly less than the MSRP as the BRZ limited.
It is quite similar overall to the other cars in the discussion, but looks better, 330hp, good build quality, durable mechanicals, etc. They are hard to find though, only made 1800 of the M coupes from 06-08. I've put 8k miles on it, and couldn't be happier.

This is one hell of a car and has a lot of presence in person!!
In reply to Sonic: I have been looking those for the last couple years. Have you spent any time in a c6 or a Cayman s? Those three have been running around me taunting me with their goodness
In reply to Woody:
Well the only reason I was including the Cayman in this was because it has a roof and more cargo space than my Miata. What area of the country has the most Cayman's? I rarely see them in the midwest.
Also, what gas mileage does your car get? What are problems with the early Cayman's that I would hypothetically have to look out for?

Actually I love these cars and there is one at a local dealer with low miles for around 24 grand?? Thanks for reminding me! How much space is there in the trunk? How badly does the S54 guzzle gas in this chassis?
Just saw a report that C6 pricing is dropping in anticipation of the upcoming C7. (Boy, I really hate that nomenclature. Give me solid axle, mid-year, shark body, etc.)
Singleslammer: Only a bit...I didn't care for the interior of the Vette or the width of the thing. It is a great performer though. I also couldn't find many in the mid 20's price range, anything remotely decent was $30k+. As for the Cayman, they were also several thousand more, and my perception was that there were many more failure points and known weak spots than the M, and Porsche parts prices are higher than even BMW M prices.
That's one thing I really like about the car, as fancy as it is, it is still fairly simple and based on proven mechanicals. There are no 8 settings for the diff or transmission, or fancy vario steering. Just a regular 6 speed, LSD rear, proper hydrolic steering assist, and the S54 has been proven to be quite a stout engine, especially the later ones. It almost feels to me like the last of the M cars that kept the original M values: High RPM non turbo screamer motor, track ready suspension and brakes that won't kill you on the street, and upgraded but understated good looks.
On the 1700 mile road trip around New England we took two weeks ago, I had no less than 7 strangers make a point to tell me how much they liked the car, I haven't had that since I was daily driving my MGA in high school, and I've had some nice cars in between. It is striking in person.
Joshua: We just took the car for a week's vacation, and brought everything we needed. The battery bump in the trunk is kind of annoying, but with the hatch there is plenty of space for two. One reason we went with the coupe over the roadster is for the extra luggage room as we use this as our road trip car. Fuel economy is much better than expected! All highway, I usually see 25-27 MPG, cruising at 80+. Around town in the winter, in the low 20s. I've never had a tank lower than about 21.

One of my favourite cars. If I had 30grand burning a hole in my pocket, I would be looking for one right now
The real issue I have with the new versus old thing is that I tend to keep the car for 10 years. My experience is that by then they are pretty much used up and you end up on your mechanics xmas card list.
If I started with a 6-10 year old car, I will have spent a lot more time in the big maintenance (at my expense) portion of the car's lifespan.
Don't get me wrong, I have been driving Brit cars for over 30 years, so I know how to keep a car on the road, I just don't want to go back to where its 3 in the morning and I need to get the ride going so I can report to work. Novelty wore off.
depends really.. I have a 16 year old BMW that I daily... it's actually been my most reliable car ever.. even over new stuff.

agreed. Our two "dailies" are a 10 and 12 year old Korean econoboxes. They've both been dead nuts reliable and cost next to nothing to keep on the road. After 10 years with one, and 4+ on the other, they have combined to not start one time due to a 10 year old crank sensor.
I'm ok with used..... as long as it's the "right" used.

Still substantially cheaper than Porsche replacement parts.

I think the Brit cars thing has poisoned your view of "older" cars! I exclusively drive older cars (2x 1996 right now) and have never had to call for a ride from somewhere. Then again, I don't usually have just one car and I can tell when something is marginal and fix it before it goes wrong.

I test-drove an automatic and liked how fast it responded to the paddle shifters.
What dealer are you talking about? I've been looking for a well-cared for Z4M Coupe ever since I sold my Z4 3.0si coupe. M-Coupe has the better suspension and better tire/wheel sets. please let me know the dealer or at least your town. Thanks.

Looks nice, I can drive it this weekend and report back if you would like.
In reply to Sonic:
Thanks for the great info! I keep showing these to my wife to get her primed for when I get serious. She HATES the corvette (something about chest hair and gold chains) and would much prefer me to look elsewhere. I like the Cayman but they turn me off a little for some reason.

The Cayman is only a small upsidedown L away from being a Gayman.

That is funny...
And sad...
But most likely true!
