I was talking a bone stock Stratus to get to touring car level.
I'd just freshen the suspension with rubber bushings throughout, maybe look at a set of nice aftermarket seats that aren't all bling/JDM nonsense, perhaps a stiffer set of anti-sway bars and some braided flex lines for the brakes. Then I'd look into a stock location speaker upgrade and XM or Sirius radio and keep driving it.

Lots of our friends were involved in that series--Donohue, Randy Pobst, Peter Cunningham, TC Kline, Walt Puckett. I want to say the cars made 300 horsepower from 2.0 liter while on pump gas. (Someone may want to check me on the gas requirement.)
I would love to see such an article.
For some reason, I first thought of the Peugeot from the original Taxi.
I associate BTCC style with late 90's European stuff.
While looking for a picture of that 406, I found this. Ooo, yum. One of the prettiest coupe shapes ever, racerfied.

That would be rad.
The yellow Neuspeed Accord that Randy drove is one of my favorite racecars ever.

I think this guy nailed it:

These cars have a unity of purpose that has everything they can change focused on going faster. Everything about them that is open to change - the wheel combination, stance, etc - has been pushed as far in the direction of maximum performance as it will go.

Uh, that's what they started with for the NATCC cars.
Here's some moving pictures goodness. Includes Ron Searle in one of the Camrys above.
