Team T-Bone is still on a high from the $2015 challenge! We are already planning our entry for next year and would like to use this years challenge car as our base platform, but change the exterior entirely. Problem is, we only have about $130 left in our budget from this year.

Question: Can we sell parts off of it to put some cash back into it for next year? We think we can sell the fenders, front and rear bumpers, hood, etc. to get about $500 to use toward our new design. Does anyone know what meets the rules? We saw several cars that had been at previous challenges, but weren't sure how they managed their subsequent year budgets. Thanks in advance for any insight.

You can recoup up to $1008 for next year, but may not recoup more than was paid for the car (or other purchased stuff being sold)

Trading is however unlimited until you fully recoup the amount spent, in other words if you paid $1000 for the car, recoup up to $999 and you can continue to trade.

If you paid $2000 for the car you can only recoup $1008.

Awesome. So if I understand you correctly, we can recoup $1,008 by selling parts off of the current car since we spent $1890 total on our budget($1,000 car purchase price) ... and we can trade stuff thereafter up to the full $1,890 we spent?

Not that we are planning to do that, we think we only need about $500 or so to achieve what we want to do. Thanks again!

Trading has no limit.

If you paid $1000 for the car you can claim up to the $1000, that's it, however of you do that, you cannot trade anymore... hint hint (cough, $999, cough)

If you purchased items for the car, ie: you bought 2 radiators for $50, then sold one for $35, you can claim more, up to the claim total of $1008. In our example, you claimed $999 on the car you can only claim $9 of the $35 you got back for the radiator because you met the $1008 limit.

Let me reiterate, "Trading has no limit"

You may want to read the rules again. Iirc there is no more trading in the rules and you may sell off up to $1008 no matter how much you paid for the car.

This.

I also think (ok, so its getting dangerous, I'm thinking again), that basically you just start your budgeting from the beginning again, like you never participated in the 2015 challenge and you were always building for 2016. Meaning you get no 'reset' (like if you recouped 200 before the 2015 challenge, you are only eligible to recoup 808 more).

That said, parts not on the car at the challenge do not count to the budget, so for example, if you upgraded from stock and ran a $300 ECU system in 2015 but removed it and went back to stock for 2016 you could definitely take the $300 ECU off the budget (with no hit to recoup). If you sell the ECU for more than $300, I don't think you can claim more than $300 either, because it was not part of the car in the original car+parts deal.

I'd hate to put all the effort into rebuilding our ride and getting disqualified for a budget mistake. So, we had already sold off $500 in stuff from the original car for the $2015 challenge. Now we want to sell off another $500-$700 of parts and use the cash towards our rebuild for $2016 ... is that legit?

You can sell off $508 for budget.
