Been running around with some drag racers lately, they do the No prep and the street racing thing, and its been hell of a time. So Ive been thinking about building a track car.

I think I know how I'd do it, but Im curious how you guys would do it.

Criteria

Cheap as possible Sleeper is a bonus RWD Probably auto

Turbo and nitrous v8 S10 with caltracs.

Volvo wagon. I'd probably drop in a 5.0L, but it can be done with all Volvo parts (I don't have the Volvo knowledge, and don't feel like going through the learning curve, though I do have the Volvo )

I particularly like how a tubbed Volvo wagon looks!

I'd go with a Fox body LTD with a built 351W and Nitrous, but that's just me.

It's hard to do a seriously fast sleeper without spending serious money.

A GM X-body is another good cheap option that doesn't look fast.

Grand National with a decent turbo and either a chip tune or a standalone. 10s is doable on pump gas although a little methanol helps.

I may be biased a little bit.

94-95 mustang + Cage + Stroker 460. Put in some nice slicks out back and run 10's all night long.

Pink is optional

foxbody with a windsor and nitrous. 351 blocks take the abuse better but a 302 has cheaper parts. the foxbody 4 link that everyone here hates works great on the dragstrip!

How has no chastised this man for street racing? Alas, I used to "run what I brung" on the streets. Good times, I still think back and wonder how I'm alive today.

Do what my friend is doing: He got a $100 1995 Camaro RS with no drivetrain> He is putting in a $200 4.8L with a Chinese turbo and a $350 Turbo 400.

Side note: I hate that no-prep racing stuff. Enough stuff can go wrong on a well-prepped track, no need to increase the odds of things going wrong even more.

You might have to overnight parts from Japan for Race Wars.

Am I missing something, or is there a reason nobody has pointed out copying what Andy Nelson has done?

First challenge he came to, he had a 10.6sec Nova. $2000.

I may be mistaken, but that seems like the easy button. Or a car just like it.

To do it sneakily I'd think the big slicks out back are gonna be your giveaway. Therefore AWD for the launch and light weight to keep from breaking everything all the time.

S-10 pick up with Olds Bravada transfer case. Engine can be whatever flavor of GM goodness you want and a pair of nitrous bottles to liven it up.

Air to air IC In the bed of a pickup is neat to look at but E36 M3 for efficiency.

You are missing the hard part-Step one: Be Andrew Nelson.

the answer 10-15 years ago was DSM. dunno if you can still find AWD auto trans's for them cheap enough, but that car is interior, turbo, and injectors away from tens.

I don't believe he meant literally street racing. I think he meant the street race style events at the drag strip, where they don't prep the track and they don't have the time clocks running.

Which is why I suggested the Nova. Little car fabrication and mostly engine and rear suspension.
