I loved Group C racing
I wish I had a group of people transforming my car tonight for this weekends autocross. i have no power steering
My Dad and I did that once, but it took us 2 days.
I was leading the points, and our home track had an invitational that they made mandatory for points runners. I didn't want to run it, but had no choice.
Sure enough, I destroyed my car in the feature. It was a Sunday afternoon. A fan came over to the pits, and offered us a same year/model car he had sitting behind his house.
We picked it up that night, had it race ready by Wednesday, and won the feature with it Friday night
We always had a spare car after that.
Great video! He was really working that car before the crash - love the older tires. Also love the fact that they rebuilt the car in a shed with a tin roof that was apparently open on one side.
Those early 80's Aussie races are Race Cars to me. I lived in Australia at the time and watched Brock and Johnson battle it out in those awesome beasts. That's what a race car is supposed to look like.
Dick Johnson was my hero growing up, he came from nowhere to be the Ford super driver, his fortunes really turned after this

YES. I don't know much about it, but everything I see about 80's-era Aussie saloon racing is just plain kick-ass. There was some killer racing in cars that were really interesting.
That rebuild clip was gnarly. Very inspiring.
You guys sent me down the rabbit hole. I've been forcing my wife to watch old 80's Bathurst footage got the last couple of days. She'd like to speak to you...
Here's the lap Dick Johnson was on before he crashed. Holy moly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ektTw5lpoyY
More Bathurst footage:
Dick Johnson in a Sierra Cosworth vs Mark Skaife in a Skyline GTR - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMhj22QLH1Y&NR=1 (Spot the E30's and AE86's in the rest of the field.)
Nail-bitingly tense in-car clip from Glenn Seton's R31 Skyline: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pqszux7F1JA&feature=related
Turbo RWD race car + wet track = lairy handling!
You should head back to Melbourne town sometime for the Phillip Island Classic or Historic Winton. Usually lots of the old Group-C cars in attendance, and they get given a good shake down.
Love that track! Love watching the Australian racing. I wonder if they would be willing to trade NASCAR for Supercar. It would be nice to see some real racing in big V8 cars for a change.
I want to head back home in November for a couple of weeks, where in Vic are you located, I am from Rowville
I can't say it enough. Boy, do we need a return to that style of racing. So much gnarlier/interesting to watch that what's out there now.
That Bathurst footage was awesome.
More! I can't stop
This is the start of a 163-odd lap race, but you wouldn't know it. And the second half has an interview with Dick Johnson as he battles for fourth place. Chatty guy once they get him started. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6beSTw7vCs
Brock's VH Commodore is the reason I keep telling my wife we need to get a Pontiac G8 so I can put a Commodore nose on it.
I was either glued to the box or at Bathurst from 1970 until 1999 when I came here, I saw every one of those races from start to finish.
The Green's Tuff" incident is a standout as is the following

Larry Perkins Last to first win was my all time favorite effort, followed by Godzilla winning the race after ripping a wheel off the car in the rain

I go between a flat in the city, and my parents' house in Sherbrooke, (which isn't far from Rowville.) However, I'm moving back to Perth later this year, though probably not 'till after November.
