I replaced the cat on our '95 Legacy (2.2) two and a half years and 35k miles ago. One of the welds has failed on it in the last week. Guessing this can't be welded up, can it? Replacements on eBay look to be around $150. I paid quite a bit more than that a few years ago and am not too happy that it failed.

Suggestions on where to source an inexpensive replacement?

Is it a cast piece?

Yeah, if its stainless or mild steel just re-weld it. If its cast it would be pretty difficult to re-weld.

do you even need to pass emissions where you live?

WI Doesn't have state inspection IIRC. At least it didn't when I kept sconnie plates on the wifes' car because I was lazy and that was where she was from.

They check emissions every other year. No access to a welder... Thinking I'll order the replacement on eBay.

Any local exhaust shop should be able to weld it up in no time for much less than an new cat.

Thanks for the advice guys. Turns out an exhaust hanger broke which lead to the cat cracking. Midas welded them both for $120. Much better than buying a new cat!
