I think that the C5 Z is faster around a track than an LS3 C6. The C5 Z is also a hardtop. It is certainly more fun to drive, in my opinion. That's partly why I got a C5Z. I paid $21k for mine with 47k miles.

Yea, there's a 57k mile Z06 for sale nearby, black on black, for about $19k. The alternative, of course, is just to put the price difference I would be spending back into the FD and call it good. It's already a lot faster than many C5/C6s around the track anyway. Long term outlook for reliability, parts availability, etc. are a whole other thing entirely.

Now that they've left the room, what about an LSx swap into your FD? That would take care of much of the reliability concern, and you'd still have a light package with a reasonable tire budget.
That's actually not a bad idea. That's one of the few swaps, if done right, you really won't lose money on.

That's where I keep ending up. I mean, sure, you would have a more unique car after the swap, but it just doesn't make sense financially or time wise to do it. Like a big-buck LS3 Miata swap; you end up with $30k in a car worth $10k. Just not worth it unless you're rich and kind of crazy.
I just put a new motor in the FD <5k miles ago. I could sell it and recoup some of the cost. The shell is far from perfect. Fixing the body/paint + swap would end up costing me more than just selling the FD as-is and buying a vette.
I'll just leave this here.

To be fair, a well-done LS-7 will be worth more than what you put into it.
Dropped the LS1 into my 951 after the factory motor went bad. Don't think it negatively impacted the value of the car and it may be worth a little more than a good, modded one with the stock motor in it.
Reason I didn't just dump the car is I'd spent a decent amount of money getting a custom welded rollbar in the car and the rest of the setup (suspension, brakes, safety) was ready to go. Felt I had too much wrapped up in the shell that I'd never recoup if I sold it as a roller.
Guess I'll have to keep the car for awhile before I sell it. Damn.
