The ignition cylinder failed, spontaneously, on my '07 GTI this past Thursday. So my car is stuck in the work parking lot. The ignition cylinder does not rotate more than about 15°, far from the 90° to crank, and does not rotate backwards at all. The key is in great condition and the remote functions work just fine. I did some light sleuthing and it appears that I need to replace the entire ignition assembly if I can't rotate and remove the cylinder.

Either way, a new VIN-keyed ignition cylinder takes 10days to 1 month to arrive. It is on order as of yesterday along with a new ignition assembly. My driveway is sloped and crowded and the trans won't shift out of P, so I would rather not have it towed if I can avoid it. If I have the key, and it's my car, and I'm replacing parts anyway, can I hot wire it long enough to drive it 2mi home?

I do not know a good VW shop off the top of my head in town, so I am reluctant to have it towed to a shop on short notice.

Thanks in advance, everything is hitting the fan recently and the GRM is my last best hope.

I would imagine you can remove the electrical portion of the switch from the end of the lock assembly. Stick the key in the tumbler, then turn the electrical switch with a screwdriver.

Providing, A: the steering is able to unlock and B: German engineers built the switch in a sensible fashion, like every other group on the planet.

I'm going to say that's highly unlikely, unless the Germans have evolved significantly in the last 30 years (the youngest version of a German car I worked on, which was zero different in mentality than the oldest German car I worked on, which, best I can tell, the same mentality held true for German tanks in the 1940s...  To wit, "German engineering" and "sensible" are diametrically opposed concepts).

Why not just get it towed to your house?
